I just bought a farmall model "A" out of a feild and I'm trying to get it running.I'm not getting any fire right now. I have put a new set of points & condenser in it. This tractor has a magnito , can anyone tell me how to check the ing coil or mag to see if they are good so I don't have to throw parts at it . Thanks for any advise you can give.
Jeff

Take a ohm meter and put one lead to the screw on the side and the other lead in the coil cap where the coil wire would go and see what you have for a reading on an H4 mag usally anything under a 10.6 would be weak or dead coil. JON

my Ing. system is a fmx4. I'm not sure if it is the same as a h4 or not but thanks for the ohm.

You need to check to make sure your mag isn't being grounded out. This is how the engine is shutdown by grounding out the mag. With a distributor the ignition switch kills the battery voltage to the ignition components. There may be switch to ground out the mag, I had an A, but it
had a distributor. The coil may be weak too.

The MagMan that posts on here rebuilds IH mags.

The most usual problem is a wire shorting out. Most of these old gals have dry rot in the wires or the groumets where the wire passes through the mag housing. After you are certain that the wires are good check for dirt and rust in the mag. Good luck.

my kill wire is unhooked so I know it is not grounded. Where is the mag located so I can check them wires? Can you ohm the coil ? Can you ohm the mag?

The mag is located on the right side of the engine. Follow your sparkplug wires from the plug to the cap on the mag. The center wire is from your coil. Don't be jerking all these wires off then forgetting where they went.

I would replace the coil wire with a new copper wire available from your local auto parts store.
Then recheck your point gap and set to .013".
Why are you asking where the mag is when you stated you installed new points? Hal
