That's an easy way to adjust your valves as Wayne has described. That firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.

Warm the engine so you get an accurate adjustment; have the hood off so all you need to do is remove the valve cover when you are ready to adjust.
Locate #1 sparkplug wire in the distributor cap; remove the cap & rotate the engine so the rotor is pointing to #1 terminal. Adjust both #1 valves.
If the spark plugs are removed, you should ve able to rotate the engine with the fan belt so the distributor rotor is pointing to the terminal of the next cylinder in the firing order; adjust those valves. Continue in the same manner until finished.
The feeler gauge should have a slight dragging feel as you pull it out from between the valve & the rocker arm. If you try the next smaller size feeler, it should not have any resistance when inserting or removing.

There might be a very useful chart for you, (to help set the valves), six topics below this one, in the topic titled "Is the rookie missing something?", in the first post in that topic by 'Bob'. You'd only have to move the engine twice, to set all the valves.
I 'saved' it, and printed it out.

On a six cylinder the rotation and two adjustments won't work.
The following always works on all four stroke engines.
On each individual cylinder, adjust the intake valve when the exhaust valve just starts to open. Adjust the exhaust valve when the intake just closes.

Janicholson,

Funny you don't think you can set all the valves on a 6-Cylinder using only 2 crank positions!

It DOES work, and my opinion is backed up by the OFFICIAL IH DOCUMENT reproduced here!

I did not see the c-264 engine listed on the IH sheet. wonder if it would apply also?

It sure will work on your engine. It will work on any 4 cylinder engine with solid lifters, displacement doesn't matter. Hal
