ok, next question... my 1953 Super C was beig driven by yours truly about 5 miles up the road to my inlaws farm so I could park it in their new barn and look at the hydralic issue I posted about a bit ago. Anyway, on the way there in 4th gear going up a small hill the tractor begain to spit and sputter. It didn't seem to be under a load, but it acted like it wanted to die. I slowed down and shifted to 2nd and idled down some and made it the rest of the way.Any ideas on this before I tear into it? I am guessing plugs and wires, etc first since I haven't done anything with them since I bought the tractor a year or so ago. Any other ideas... you guys are more than helpful every other time I have tried so I thought I would go to the well again.

Don't forget to check the vent in the fuel tank cap is completely clear.

I've had a Super C for 20 years. First thing to check is points, condenser, dist. cap (you said you did) and plugs.

Do you see any crud coming out of the fuel tank into the bowl?

When was the last time the carb was cleaned/rebuilt?

Just some suggestions.

I had a similar problem with my cub with mower deck. After replacing coil, clearing fuel lines, and opening carb with not much change,I changed dist cap and solved the problem

Something to look at, make sure your choke rod didn't work itself back from the full open position. Sometimes this will happen from the vibration if the detent in the carb is worn. Happened to me in a parade once with my H. Thought the worst until I reached down to shove the ignition button in and found the choke rod all the way out.

Same thing happened to me on my Super C. Last thing I looked for.

Probably fouled the spark plugs. If the tractor has not been used hard for awhile, but rather just used easily, carbon and soot will build up in the cylinders and when you open it up on the road, eventually the soot will begin to come loose and can foul the plugs. My H loader tractor does it everytime I take it out on the road, but will eventually come out of it. You may need new plugs, or remove and wire brush the plugs you have.

I think Rusty Farmall may have it. I've had the same trouble on these tractors when they aren't being worked much.

Did chokeing help it or didn't you try that?? Sounds like a gas problem as Hal says

I didn't try choking it... I was scared it might die and not restart.... didn't want to have to go get the trailer and tow it

I would check that gas tank for dirt or rust or both. Sounds like the it may not be getting gas.
Pull the gas line at the carburetor and see if you have a good full flow. You may have an inlet screen at the carburetor plugged too. Hal

This may be just obvious but mine did that and it was water in the fuel.Seems I paid 2.00 a gallon for it too.Cleaned the bowl and was on my way.Btw it ran fine sitting there, but burped and snorted when I tried to go.

The hill may be the indicator.
The inlet for the sediment bowl in the tank is above the floor of the tank. If there is non-gasoline material (water is heavier than gas) it will get down the system on a hill. Good luck,
JimN

Travis I want to add one more thing, after driving my new(to me)504 6 miles (4 more and I would have been home) it sputtered and quit but would run a little with the choke out. After going through the carb twice, new fuel lines and an in line filter, it turned out to be a bad switch.
