Is there an internal drain hole in the axle housing for the Farmall A? When I take it for a stroll and stop, I get oil leeking out of the brake rod exit hole. As if the gear oil is not returning via an internal drain hole.

Sounds like it's time to replace the seals in the transmission where the shafts enter. There is one on each side, one in the front where the shaft from the engine enters the transmission and in the rear for the PTO. If your brakes are contaminated you'll need to relace the bands and clean the drums. Dave.

There is a seal at the transmission housing, and at the final drive to keep the oil OUT of the brakes.

The oil does not need to "return", as the two housings are separate, and have their individual oil fills, and the oil levels are way different.

The final drive housing is what I speak of. I see it has a sump at the bottom and I suppose it has gears that go up to the top to connect to the shaft that comes out of the transmission. What I am trying to find out is if I have bad seals leaking oil in the final drive housing or if there is a oil return hole that is clogged not allowing the oil to return.

Thanks,

MACE

As others said, the final drive housing and the transmission housing are separate. The brake drun is on the shaft(the pinion shaft) that runs between those two housing. If oil is coming out of the brake drum housing, the shaft seals are bad(two of them on the shaft) and need to be replaced. Also, I've seen the transmission on these tractors way overfilled and that would contribute to leak problems. Level plug is on left hand side front of transmission housing behind the rod that works the brake on that side.

To replace those seals, the final drive housings have to come off. Also, the brake drum has to come off the pinion shaft. It's not a difficult job, but will take some time. If you don't have a parts catalog to see how it's put together, you need to get one. While you are at it, you might as well replace the brake bands, especially if the brakes are weak at all, since it's quite a chore to remove those final drives to get to them.

Yep,

I will replace the brake bands while I have the final drives off. I do have a parts catalog so that makes it a lot easier too.

Thanks,

MACE
