Guys,

Just bought an f-12, 1936 model. First Farmall and am excited about the restoration. My first problem is the steering, it is froze. How do I get the gear off the top of the steering mechanism? Then get the shaft out of the housing? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks - M>Priar

You can un bolt the top of the cover that is ontop of the pedistal and slid that back with the steering shaft, you then can take the top gear off wiht a puller. Normall when the steering is froze there was a cultivator on it when it was used last.

If it is anything like our 40 M (which it is) that gear is a pain in the you know what to remove. We used our loader tractor with a chain around the frame rails to lift the front end up in the air. Then, I took a dead blow and beat on the shaft until the shaft fell out the bottom of the front end and the gear stayed on the top. It requires two people to accomplish, but it worked for me. Hope it helps.

I pulled the gear off my F14 so I could drop the shaft and replace the bushings.

I used a gear puller. I used heat. I used ice. I used a BFH. I used a LOT of language that I did not learn in Sunday School. I used multiple repetitions of all of the above.

It took over a week to get it off. As I headed out for work in the morning, I'd give it a couple of whacks with a ballpeen hammer, and take as much of a turn as I could get on the gear puller. When I got home in the evening, I'd do it again.

One morning, as I was leaving for work, I gave it my usual whack, and that sucker popped off, the puller went all the way up and hit the roof of the garage, and the gear went bouncing all over the place.

To this day, I can't figure out why my usual luck didn't hold, and one or both didn't go through the windshield of my truck...
