I have I-544. When I engage the starter, the solenoid pull in, but the starter does not turn (both with the engine cold and hot). I have to engage the solenoid numberus time to get the starter to spin (start engine). I have replaced the entire starter and solenoid and it still acts the same.

The solenoid engages every time. Anyone run into this problem and how did they fix it? I am thinking about replacing my cables from the battery to the starter to see if this helps. It is just really a pain the the butt engaging the solenoid 30 plus time to get the motor to turn. Any insite would be greatly apprechated. Thank you.

Well my cables do look like they are 40 years old. My connections are all good. I will take a look at the voltage at the solenoid and the starter motor.

I could take out all the plugs and try moving the crank around (move cam) to see if it is a tooth. I will let you know what I find. Thanks

Sounds as though you do not have enough current going to the solenoid to engage it. Take a VOA meter and see what kind of voltage you have at the little wire when trying to start, and then see how much you have on starter side of solenoid when trying to turn over. Might need cables cleaned or if not at least a #1 or bigger cable, might need bigger cables.

You can have good cables but just a bad ground somewhere along the electrical path. Be sure to clean where the ground cable attaches to the frame. But I bet you knew that. Good luck.

an engine will almost always stop at the same place.. it is possible some of the teeth on your ring gear are worn.. th check try turning your crankshaft about 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn using the crank or turning the crankshaft pulley.(make sure the key is off)then try the starter.. if it starts right off try the same proceedure again several times.. if it always engages then you know your teeth on the ring gear are worn..

I would replace those battery cables. I thought your spring on the bendix was weak, but I see you've replaced the starter. I've had them to just click and that was the solenoid on mine. Hal

In neutral, brakes locked, with the ignition off. Use a battery cable about a foot or so long, and jump the solenoid from the starter side to the battery side. Be careful to put the end of the cable in contact with the starter side first, then the battery side (this reduces the chance of hitting a ground and making a hole in something). There will be sparks if the jump is successful, but the starter will spin if it is good. If this produces no starter motion, either the tractor's battery cables are not connected cleanly, or they are bad. Many solenoids click, but fail to actually connect the power through them (even new ones can be bad). Some customers clean up their old parts and return them to the store and get a refund. Then they are resold as new to the likes of me. Good luck finding the problem, JimN

Not a good idea to put the cable on starter first, then put on battery. The gas coming out of a battery can and has caused explosions. You always hook up battery first, then hook to starter or solenoid, then if their is a spark, it is not in an area where the is flammable gasses present.

I may have not stated emphatically enough (((((do not run the cable to the battery post!!! Only across to the solenoid battery side. Sorry if I was not specific enough, I tried in my wording. You are exactly correct on the hydrogen fume explosive nature.

Ok, I replaced the battery cables and it works better, but not good. should I jumper the return post of the solenoid (little wire) directy to the battery post (of the starter) and see if it goes?
