Pulling Question: S M v. SMTA Pulling Power

Given all other things equal on these two tractors, and someone had a spare SMTA to turn into a puller, does the SMTA gearing give it an advantage over the Super M, or are the first gear ratios the same on both?
Would anything else give one the advantage over the other, again assumimg both tractors are factory stock?

SMTA gears ... 52/21 = 2.48
SMTA with TA low ... 2.48/.7 = 3.54
M gears ... 44/19 = 2.32
Low/low M gears 49/? = ?
560 gears ... 54/19 = 2.84
560 with TA low ... 2.84/.70 = 4.05

Here ya go. I included the 560 gears because they will fit the SMTA tranny and are an option for someone who wants to slow down tractor in first gear.

The net effect is that a SMTA with 560 gears will run at 57% of the speed of a M at the same engine RPM. If you put the 560 ring gear and tranny main shaft, it will be about 55%.

Can the 560 gears fit in a regular SM without the TA. If so will they fit in an SW6 with out a TA and slow it down too? Thanks JaredM

No, your only option is too use the low-low option. Don't know where to find one but I assume some specialty tractors all had them. For instance, a cotton picker or some specialized harvester might be so equipped.

My parts book doesn't give the teeth count on the first gear of the low-low countershaft so I can't tell what the ratio is.

I think that a M or SM ring gear and mainshaft will fit your tractor. That should speed up all the gears in a SW6 which is NOT what you want, I presume.

The SMTA is probably heavier due to it having the TA and live PTO, which would actually give the SM an advantage because it's lighter to start with. Horsepower and gearing I believe are the same.

Most pulls won't let you use TA ,JD guys don't like them, and if they make you use low gear TA isn't going to help much, the SM will be lighter and shorter, I've seen both tractors do well in pulls, when over 6500lbs the SMTA will do better with TA on low side, if both motors are running same hp its a toss-up.The cheapest IH to pull with is a 460 you can run 4500 to 8000lbs and with a 301 motor you'll give other tractors fits.

superpuller: You hit the nail right on the as to why I never got into tractor pulling. When modern day tractor pulling came to my hometown, I had a 2 year old 1066 and also had a 300, 560D and 656D. Since I had the only 1066 in our imediate area, IH dealer was right on my doorstep wanting me to enter. Since my 1066 was out on custom work, bringing down $800. per day, plus they wanted 2 days for tuneup and weight placment. I wasn't about to give up $2,000. revenue to satisfy his whims. Deere only had one 125 hp tractor in the area as well, and its owner told them to get lost as well.

Then they wanted me to enter 560D. I listened to all their silly rules like no TA use, no Fast Hitch use, etc. I told them if one tractor was engineered with certain advantages so be it, must be a better tractor. Too many self righteous nuts in that sport for me.
