Has anyone ever put a magnet into the bottom of their fuel tank to collect rust and prevent your sediment bowl from being plugged?

Your basic everyday rust isn't actually magnetic. If it has a little bit of steel or iron left in it that hasn't rusted yet, yes, it will be attracted to a magnet. But most of the rust in a fuel tank won't be attracted to a magnet. I've bought several old tractors and my feeling is, once you take the tank off and clean out the rust, you're done fighting with it for your lifetime.....

In engines and transmissions, magnets will pick up small metal particles and prevent them from recirculating in the lube.

Robert: Why shouldn't we add magnets. These tractors have been in use close to 50 years, and now we have to catch a few particles of rust.

Well I mean just look at the new vehicle industry, they are expecting to have rust to catch right away, not 50 years from now. Most new vehicles, be they cars, trucks or tractors are using magnets.

I've a round magnet with an eye-bolt through it in the bottom of my H's tank. I put it right next to the outlet port to the sediment bowl. Every year or so I snag the eye with a coathanger-wire hook, pull it up through the filler opening and wipe off the accumulated rust/ferric bits. That plus an in-line fuel filter (which I've never had to change - going on three years now) has kept my fuel flowing. My tank had about six or seven, silver-dollar-sized, moderate-to-heavy rust spots on the inside when I started doing this.

Yes, I have magnets on the bottom of a Farmall Cub <
br>and Super A. After fighting rust plugging the carb on a few occaisions, a buddy of mine was helping and put a magnet on the bottom. Works like charm, have not had trouble for a few years. It is agreed that it would be best to clean and coat the tank, but time does not always allow for this. It is GOOD appropriate technology though.

I previously had access to a lot of magnets from speakers. The round type, donut shaped. I have one attached to the pan of every engine and transmission that I own. So far--so good!!

I used to work for a Nissan dealership in San Jose, CA. Nissan has magnets in their vehicles automatic transmissions from the factory!

Putting a magnet in the gas tank won't hurt, but if you have enough rust and crud to plug up the sediment bowl, the tank needs to be cleaned out.

I used to have a Model A Ford, and I had a magnetic plug for the oil pan which was supposed to collect any metal particles in the oil.
