Alann: Do you have a good wiring diagram? The reason I ask is say wired right (I hope). The original IH operators manual for Farmall tractors contain a good diagram.

Not just sure I follow your description, are the wires going to ampmeter connected to wrong terminals. If those are reversed, ampmeter will reading will be reversed.

Thanks for the reply, Hugh. I used the diagram that is located on this site that everyone steered me to. It coincides with the one I got with the new harness from John Brillman. As fara as the wiring to the ammeter, I would think if the wires were reversed it would show charge when lights on and not running.

Alann: I think I misunderstood your original post. Are you telling me the Ampmeter never shows positive or charging? Just because the tractor will run with battery cable unhooked, doesn't indicate it is good generator. It doesn't take a whole lot of juice to keep tractor running. Have you had the generator tested to see what output is?

That's correct. Never positive. Had new brushes put in the generator, am hoping they tested it. Sorry if this is a royal pain.

Alann: No pain on your part, just the generator. I know how you feel, went through all the same 12 years ago. Generators just putting out a trickle of charge, had a bananna box full of regulators, etc. and batteries didn't last anytime.

I was using my SA and 130 in commercial farming back then. One day the generator on my SA caught fire. I went to an auto electric shop, where I did considerable business. I said," I have a new 6 volt battery, how can you get me going quickly and on 6 volt?" He responded, " Quick for that old generator will be 2 weeks as I don't have parts, Quick for a 6 volt alternator with built in regulator will be 5 min." He changed the built in regulator from 12 to 6 volt, gave me wiring diagram. I hooked it up and tractor worked better than it had for years. Within 1 year I had changed all my tractors to alternator.

I was one of these guys, going to keep my 50 year old tractors original. I have now changed my view on that. If we can improve on what IH built 50 years ago, it is our duty to do so. I really don't care whether you go 6 volt or 12 volt, just go alternator.

I now realize that improvements have been made. I will probably do as you suggested. The kicker is that it was working fine til I took it off for painting. Yes, it is getting a good ground.
Hugh thanks for all the help and even the final suggestion. It just hurts to know I can't always win.
Alan

Alan, I have a Super A converted to 12 volt, with a distributor and an alternator, not a generator, with the negative on the battery to ground. By chance do you have this set-up? I had my alternator reading backward, so if yours is like mine, maybe I can help.
Sorry, I know squat about generators, if that's what you got.
Where are you near in Pa?
