Hi all , Against my better judgment ( that's the way I do most thing's ) I bought a M off of E-bay . It's near Cornell , WI about 5 hour's from me . Now I'm trying to figure out how to get it home . I was going to rent a u-haul . At least that was the plan till I contacted u-haul and found out that they have a 4000# payload limit . M weigh's close to 5000 . Lucky it doesn't have wheel weight's and I don't know if it has fluid or not . So when and if I get it home I'll be here as often as possible collecting as much information as possible from the best people possible ! I have never even sat on a Farmall much less used one . Since I was a preteen at least on the farm in Georgia . So I don't make a complete a$$ of myself when I get up there to pick it up I have to make a complete " A " of myself here . Does an M have a normal automotive style shift pattern ? OK , That was embarrassing ~:-) . 49 year's old and can drive any semi out there and have to ask what the shift pattern is on a dinky little tractor .

It's too late to find anything out about this tractor so I'm going into this with every expectation that it'll need a major overhaul . Including transmission , final drive and steering . I suppose the first thing I'll do is take a oil sample in for a test and change it . It might take me a few week's for a tune up and I know the steering is bad so that'll have to be addressed also ( they told me it had 1/3 turn of play in the wheel ) . I'll be back with the rest of the story hopefully in the next week or so . I hope to get it next weekend barring divorce when my wife find's out I bought it ;') . Take care ...Randy

Go to your local bobcat rental place and rent a trailer from them- those will be rated heavy enough to haul a M. You will have to flip the one rear tire and casting around to fit it on a 82" wide trailer

Randy---

Shift pattern is from left side setting on the seat --- up-reverse down-1st mid-way to right up-2nd. down 3rd. all-way right up 4th. down 5th.

If you can, let the seller load it..... .My "M" with both wheels all the way in is 88 inhttp://www.ytmag.com/farmall/messages/516222.htmlches outside to outside
It weighs just under 5000# with rear wheel weights no water in the tires...

Befor trying to load it---
drive it around trying out the shift pattern
and the brakes..

I have been told the steering problem is a gear in the steering box..only 1/2 of this gear is used...so turn it around 90*,now it will be runnig in the unused part of the old gear (fixed)
Check this out I have never done it...

Hi Don L C , Thanks for the width ! I'm taking a 6-1/2 ' trailer up so I guess I'll have to take some bridge plank for the rear tires to sit on . We have plenty of it at work . Since I got it off ebay I don't think it matter's about driving it around much - It's mine . The guy selling it sells a lot on ebay so he can't afford a bad feedback and neither can I for that matter .

I found something about a steering gear fix yesterday on a super m but forgot to mark it . The person working on it thought that it was put together wrong because the gear was only worn on half the gear but it was also rubbing on a bolt head so he made some spacer washers for it . Got to go . Take care ....Randy

An M is only 5000 pounds if it's missing a few major cast iron parts... And no way it'll fit on anything Uhaul rents out, that's for sure.

So, you're going to need a REAL trailer, and a real truck to pull it with. 3/4 ton pickup, minimum, preferably a 1 ton dually.

Your major trailer issues will be width and weight. Most car haulers are way too narrow unless you narrow the tractor itself up. You have to take one or both rear wheels off and turn them around so they're dished in, and if it has a wide front end, slide that in too... Problem with that is we're talking about bolts that probably haven't seen a wrench in decades... They're probably rusted solid by now. Wide fronts are notoriously difficult to adjust on old tractors.

If you can get an 8 foot wide trailer, you're golden. It'll have a high enough weight carrying capacity and it'll be wide enough to load the tractor on.

Hi , I was only going by what the tractor data book website said it was - 5850lbs . I can alway's borrow the semi from work , I just don't like to . It's a equipment hauler day cab that's 25 years old , read - it rides like a truck :-0 . I want to make this as quick a turn around as I can , so taking wheel's off is out . Unfortunately they are not dished in now . I'm waiting for the current owner to e-mail me and tell me how wide it is . We'll see . Take care ...Randy

An M won't fit between the wheel wells of a tandem axle car trailer unless at least one wheel is dished in. It will also max out a 7000 lb GVW trailer and then some. So, if you rent a trailer, be sure you get the right one.

Randy, Randy, Randy

The shift pattern is R and 5 forward speeds, but you can't shift on the move like a semi. No syncros. You STOP, pick a gear, and go. Then, if you have to, STOP, pick another gear, and go. You can start from any gear, even fifth, and bring her up to speed.

AS for hauling it home, lots of independent haulers read this site and can contact you w/ an offer to haul.

As for making an a$$ of yourself, don't sweat it. Spend a couple hours reading this forum and you'll be good to go when you get the M. Also check out the research & info features on the left.

As for buying on Ebay, I hope you didn't lay out too much cash for a tractor that needs all the work you think it does. You can find lots of M's on this site that have good paint & are ready to work the day they roll off the trailer. Good luck.

Hi , So it's not like an 1755 Oliver ? Just kiddin . Thanks . As for the haulers , I thought of that but I like to do things on my own sort of , I don't like the way most drivers treat something if it's not their's . If I screw something up of mine then I have no-one but myself to blame .

I didn't have anything to do today or yesterday for that matter ( first time in ages ) so that's what I did . I read this forum and came up with all kinds of question's about this M . But they can wait till I know more about it ( this tractor )

No I don't think it NEED'S all that work , I'm saying that with my kind of luck it MIGHT need that much work so that's all my expectation's are so I won't be to bummed out if it turn's out to be a salvage yard reject . I tryed posting a picture of it in the photo section but it didn't show up . I tried it twice and both times it said there was an upload error . Probably because it was down loaded from the ebay site so they won't do it . ...Randy

When i bought my M i had to get it about a 150 miles (one way)to home. i found a local guy with a heavy duty flat bed truck to go get it. the standard flatbed tow trucks are not wide enough or can handle the weight. he hauled my M with a loader and a wood 7ft brushhog with no problems. it cost me about $425.

good luck
Mike

Hi , I hope it doesn't come to that . I'm trying to not borrow my boss's semi . So there a couple construction rental stores near me I'm going to call this week to see what it'll cost to rent a constuction type trailer with 8000lbs capacity . Or 10000gw . I didn't want to spend over 350 to get it home or it negates the savings of buying it off ebay . ....Randy If there's a will , there's a way !

I know your anguish when the old trigger finger clicks to confirm it's a done deal. I live on the West Coast and the miles don't configure in my thick head until after I have clicked confirmed or just said yes I'll take it for that! But to the lighter side my 17 year old son and I have been on several multi thousand mile treks resulting from an itchy trigger finger and they have all turned out to be enourmously satisfying. The people we have met and the places we have seen together are testamony to what a wonderfull country we live in. That old trigger finger has resulted in many wonderfull memories for my son and I. By the way my son and I have hauled 12,000 lb. (trailer and tractor) loads over 3,000 miles on several occasions with a 3/4 ton Chevy DuraMax (not a dually) and a deckover single wheel two axle beaver tail with no problems. The key is to have the pick-up and trailer ready to go and safe, no short cuts! Have fun and enjoy the day!!!

Randy, you couldn't have picked a better one to start on. I have bought and sold 34 tractors, mostly M's and H's on ebay in the last two years, and have never seen one with a bad trans. or rearend. Those two items are usually pretty bullet proof. The tune up part is pretty straight forward too. I switch all of mine over to twelve volt one-wire alternaters and just go with them. Have fun, and stop back, Harley
