Diesel Fuel Tank Corrosion

I have a Farmall MD that I only drive limited time each year just around the yard and in parades and shows. I only burn 10 gallons of fuel a year. Today I went out to check the fuel level in the tank and I could hardly get the cap off. Once I got it off I could see that the cap and tank are rusty especially above the diesel level. I was surprised to see this as my gas tractors don't do that and they are in the shed next to the diesel and also I would think diesel would keep the tank from rusting. Anyone know why this is and if there is some way to prevent further corrosion. I try to keep the tank full in the winter to reduce water accumulation. Roger

Roger46, keeping the tank full will stop the corrosion as you suggested you do in the winter. Also keep moisture out of the fuel by using an alcohol based "deicer" which simply removes water in the fuel. A friend of mine who ran an Allis Dealership for over 40 years tells me to put a quart of automatic transmission fluid in the fuel tank. This will remove moisture and it also lubes the pump. ATF has an affinity for moisture and works well in removing it. ...Mike in Exeter Ontario
