OK guys...what's the verdict on detergent oil in the old tractors? I heard both good and bad from A TO Z why and why not. How about running it for say a week or less, changing it after it has cleaned the engine, repeat a few times until all the crap has been "washed out"??? I would think the sludge would get trapped in the filter and the oil pump screen would catch some too, the rest would come out at the oil change. After a while the engine would be cleaner. I'm running 10/30 in her now with no problems yet and when I checked the oil it's pretty darn clean so if the engine was all slugdged up you would think it would show up in the new oil??

YOu have it correct. Use it change it and the filter every 5o hrs till (only untill) it stays clean then change as service specifications require.
There is only good to be found with detergent oil.
An extremely sludged up engine from unchanged non-det. oil can have problems, but the problems were in the engine already waiting to happen one way or the other. The time to clean up the arteries in grandma is now before the embolism.
Go for it JimN

My feelings also Jim. As far as detergent oil loosening up seals...not happening yet. I just think using it is a good thing like you said and a dirty engine is worse any way you look at it.

If you are going to put detergent oil in a tractor that has always run non-detergent, I'd suggest that you pull the oil pan off and scrape the sludge out of the bottom of it first.

I've seen them have a inch or more laying in there, it would take quite a long while to get that out otherwise.

I"ll second that - while you"re at it, pull off the valve cover, and any other covers and clean out any sludge there too. I actually attacked mine with a power washer, to get crud out of oul return passages. No problems running deterdent oil now.

Hi Red Dave, I agree with you 100%..had a B250 that I took the pan off to find two inches of black "cheese" in the bottom, now its on detergent oil, I have better oil pressure from the cleaning of pan and screen and after a few oil changes it couldn't be better...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Re: verdict on detergent oil - good advice! in reply to Red Dave, 10-24-2005 07:50:22
That's exactly what I found in the pan on one of mine: A 1" thick layer of gunk about the consitency of window putty. Also the pump pickup float had sunk into the sludge blocking most of the oil inlet screen.

I cleaned the sludge out and fixed the float. Tractor has now run flawlessly on detergent oil for 7+ years now.

That was exactly the plan next weekend....and I'll clean the oil pump screen while I'm in there.
