I have a Farmall A I bought on a sale about a year ago with a bunch of extra equipment including a IH 1000 loader. Noticed it had an alternator before I bid so was excited that it was converted to 12V. After buying and getting it home, I opened the battery box to see a 6V battery. I turns over slow like a 6V does and I am baffled. Without diggin into the electrical, I am wondering how this is done. Everything works on it electronically, lights, amp gauge. Is there a transformer or regulator somewhere that I am not seeing that reduces the alternator current down to 6V?
thanks
Fluggie

I have 6 volt alt on 300row crop with 8 volt battery. Works great because most 6 volt alts.will put out 8 volts and you can use it with 6 volt lights without damage. The extra 2 volts are just enough to spin starter faster.

A standard 12 volt alternator is easily converted to 6 volts simply by swapping in the appropriate voltage regulator. The reworked alternator will still be negative ground.

6 volt POSITIVE ground alterators indeed exist. They're essentially again a standard 12 volt alternator refitted with appropriately grounded output diodes and 6 volt regulator.

However relative to their 12 volt bretheren, 6 volt alternators and parts to convert 12 volt to 6 volt are rather spendy!

Well I'll be darned! I learned a new one today! Never had heard of 6V Alts. This really baffles me as to why guys will rebuild their old generators if there is this easy a swap.
thanks Fluggie

6 volt alternators are available, not real common but they do exist. Might be what you have.
