what year is "W" in a casting code? Sorry for such a basic question but we just moved and some of my books are still packed up.

Yeah, '51, unless it is '73.

What is a casting code? As you can tell, I"m a new tractor owner.I have a farmall 200 with a(2) point fast hitch and (5) implements. How would you go about finding the modle #"s and the year of each piece? I would like to know so I can find the right info. to fix them up. THanks for any info.

The casting code is a date that was engraved in the mold for some of the larger castings such as the rear-end/transmission, block, and torque tube. It would look like 10*25*W which is October 25, 1951. They used a letter for the year. A "ZA" would be for 1954 and an "A" for 1953, etc. The implements did not have casting codes. The best thing would be to find an owners manual for the implements for the 200. I had one for the implements for my C until I put it away prior to the cleaning lady showing up. It is now safely tucked away in my house somewhere.

Randy,
Y is 1953
Z is 1954
A is 1955 as they started over again.

1951 is the odd-ball year as they started out with U and changed over to using W (in mid-March I believe from a tractor I saw with both castings).

According to some sources the letter U and V were never used, but I also have seen the letter U in a casting code.

I have seen a number of U codes also a couple V codes. V seems to be pretty rare, maybe just one guy working at one foundry? As I recall, the last V I saw was on the belt pulley housing of either an H or M.
