I have my grandads 986 running now after it sat for about two years after he passed away. I cannot get it into gear and I did change all of the fluids. I can get the arms to lift up and down, so I know that i have pressure there. How hard is it to tackle this job on my own with a good mechanic to help me out, or should I just send it to the tractor shop for them to do.

Jorge
Thanks for the help.

Just thought of this. Maybe clutch is rusted a little so it won't stop spinning. If you can get tractor in a open area and it is an older model you can start in gear with clutch depressed try pushing brakes brakes when moving to get it to break free. Be ready to shut off engine if this does not work. This what i did one time few years ago after tractor sat all winter and the clutch still works fine.

|Just what is Doing or not doing? Is grinding gears and not going in or is it not moving when you let out the clutch? Maybe other gear is in nuetral position.

I can start her up, and when I put it into gear,
and start to bring up the clutch pedal, it wants to lurch forward, but it does not move, it does not kill the engine either. I figure either the clutch plate is stuck solid and or the brakes are frozen with it sitting for so long. I have more time than money to pay for the labor, and I take friends hunting down in South Texas to get rid of my hog problem, ( Which gets me tractor repair money each weekend )..

Sounds to me like either the clutch is slipping due to improper adjustment or oil on the facings, or because the TA is dead or out of adjustment. If the clutch was rusted tight, and the tractor was started in gear, the tractor would move, but wouldn't stop when the clutch was depressed. If the brakes were locked, and you let out the clutch, they would kill the engine (assuming they work properly). So, it sounds like a Torque Amplifier problem. I would either get a manual, and adjust the TA and engine clutch properly (they both need to be adjusted at the same time, and getting them adjusted close to spec is NOT good enough, the measurements need to be exact) or take it to a dealer and have them diagnose/fix/adjust the TA. Good luck!!

Try placing TA lever in other position sounds to me like TA is out or out of adjustment. Do you have power steering. Same pump for steering, clutch and TA other hyd pump runs 3pt. and aux. valves.
