What does L H D B stand for on the four position light switch? Is this switch designed for engines with a key switch and distributor only? I have a Farmall A with the four position switch. It is not the original. It came off of another tractor. So what should my 1941 A have?

BTW, I have a six volt generator with a 4 terminal regulator, a new wiring harness and a mag.

If you want to be original you need the cutout on top of the gen. You should get an owners manual as it will tell you how to wire it original. It will have three terminals on the cutout field,batt and gen. gen goes to arm and field goes to field and batt goes to the amp guage.

I don"t have much experience with Farmalls, as this is my first restoration project and first tractor. So as long as I leave the switch in the low or high charge position when the tractor is not running, will this keep the battery from draining down? How does that work? What removes power from the field of the generator when the tractor is not running?

The light switch can be in either L or H when the tractor is off. The other positions would be leaving the lights on, which will drain the battery.

The Field circuit of the generator is energized by the generator and is never connected to the battery. The output circuit (from the "A" terminal) of the gnerator is connected to the battery through the cut-out. The cut-out automaticly disconnects the generator from the battery when the generator isn't charging.

If your battery goes dead when the tractor is parked, but doesn't go dead if it a battery cable is removed, you have an electrical leak somewhere. But it could be anywhere. You can isolate the problem by disconnecting parts of the electrical system until you find the portion that it is draining through.

What removes the power from the field? You need a on-off switch or ignition switch to break the circuit. If you do not, you will see a slight discharge through the ammeter, and that will drain you.
