Hi !

I was wondering what the heck is clattering my B250 transmission. I opened transmission cover and there seems to be everything ok. When i rotate transmission main axle with hands, there is one stiff / tight point and after that it rotates fine again until the stiff point is reached again.

Is there more gears etc after rear of transmission what could cause clattering sound ??

Thanks in advance !

p.s If anybody have digital version somekind of repair manual or explosion diagram to transmission or rear end of tractor model B275 would be useful too, i would be grateful !

Harri,
If there are teeth broken on any gear, they will need to be replaced. Using it will be putting more tranny parts in trouble. The gear teeth need to be examined with a hand lense to be sure of what you are seeing. There may be a bent tooth, or a chunk of tooth at the root of two teeth causing the bind.
Look to see what the gear touches when binding, and look that over as well. I believe close observation can assist in the repair by not overlooking bad components. My opinion is to repair it now.

Yes, your right, i have to dismantle whole transmission and replace at least the broken gear and also check other gears and bearings.

My friend thought that could it be possible that noise is coming somewhere near PTO gear ? there have to be one gear somewhere rear of the transmission reduction gear 1:3 i think ?

Harri, for all the time it will take, remove the pan under the torque tube and check the throw out bearing and yoke that holds it. These bearings are really a bakelite ring, I had a broken yoke that caused a lot of chatter underneath the tractor...B250 owner..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi Michael, Thanks for your hints too.

I already take off bolts for the torque tube rear end because i wanted to test that fault is not anywhere in the clutch. Now when i took of rear end bolts, i can separately rotate transmission and torque tube, no clattering sound occurs when rotating torque tube but when rotating transmission main shaft, clattering occurs again, and there is one "tight" place when one full rotation made ( when main biggest gear is rotated 360 degrees)

But youre right that throw out bearing looks like it is burned so maybe i have to change that also. Yoke looks fine, do i have to split the tractor before i can change the throw out bearing?

Harri, you do not have to split a B250 to change the throw out bearing, keep in mind the bearing is really a Bakelite material, dark in appearance, it may be ok. Some guys tell me that you can use a regular bearing such as in a B414. Anyway , good luck with the tractor, they are handy little devils...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi Harri. The B250 has i simple 5 speed transmission very similer to the Farmall H tractor. Turn your shaft slowly and look for the chipped or marked gear. Do not know what else it can be. I have a B250 serial number 549 and as IH started at serial number 501 the tractor is the 49th made. MJ

Thanks for the information MJ.

I try to look today chipped / marked gear.did you think that marked gear is missing / broken tooths etc.?

there is one gear which is two teeth's broken, but that gear does not rotate at all when the main shaft is rotating.(when there is no gear selected)

If there are missing teeth, maybe they are getting caught somewhere, causing the shaft to bind? Also, maybe when the teeth stripped out on the gear, the extra force damaged one of the input or output shaft's bearings , causing it to have a bind in one spot? I have never really worked on a transmission, but just a thought. . .

I thought also that if there is broken gear parts somewhere but clattering is so regular, everytime same position and same kind of sound.

But..Shame on me, i dont even think about that choice what if extra force which broked one gear, might damaged main shafts gear or bearings.. well i have to dismantle tranny tomorrow and check all parts. Thanks again good for good advices !
