Ret, if its a coil ignition which is wired correct and you switch the ignition on, it should show a discharge of around 4 amps. If its a coil ignition place a voltmeter or at least a test lamp on the coils input (from switch not to distributor) and verify theres voltage getting at least to the coil, cuz YOU GOTTA HAVE THAT. Then, if the points are good??? and openign n closing as they should, when the engine is cranked over, the test lamp over on the coils output (to distributor) terminal ought to flash On n OFF. IT HAS TO BEFORE THE COIL CAN FIRE. To see if the coil is producing any spark pull the end out of the distributor cap (leave coil end intact) and place that bare end to within 1/8 from tractor iron, turn her in n crank her over, and insure a good blue spark jumps that gap. If not, post back and I will post my Standard Troubleshooting Procedure, BUT CHECK THE POINTS FIRST CUZ THAT ALONE MAY BE THE PROBLEM if shes not sparking despite voltage to the coil. Remove the cap n insure the points are gapped correct and indeed open n close as the engines cranked causing the distributors cam to rotate. If badly burned or pitted, THEY NEED REPLACED although filing them might get her running at least TRY THAT !!!!! ! If the are good but only gray oxide coated, non abrasively clean/buff/polish them n see if she sparks then. Okay if she has fire, IS SHE GETTING GAS???? If you remove the plugs after not starting are they wet or bone dry????? ? If dry check gas to the carb and if its bowl is filling to the proper level and if the choke is working n closing?? Does she throw any smoke out the stack when cranking and the choke closed??? If none ever I again suspect shes not getting gas into the cylinders. If the plugs are dry and she never smokes make sure clean fresh gas is at least getting to the carb (check any sediment bowl or sut off valves or filters),,,,, ,,,that the needle n seat are allowing gas to fill the bowl to proper level,,,,, and the choke is working. You gotta see if its a fuel or an ignition problem, so check for spark out of the coil wire (see above) and check n clean the points as necessary n post back for more info if she refuses to spark. Remove a plug n have its wire atatched but its side grounded n turn her on n crank her over to insure the plug fires???? If she has spark then get gas to her, check for gas to teh carb and see if tis bowl fills and see if she ever smokes and if the plugs come out wet or dry??? Hows the compression??? If she has fuel n fire try n pull start her !!!!! !! If you cant pull her remove the plugs n squirt some oil in the cylinders to improve ring seal n compression n see if she runs then ??? FUEL N FIRE N COMPRESSION AND TIMED RIGHT ought to make her run. Post back if shes not firing for more help once you check the points as posted above IF ITS A COIL INGITION If its a mag Im unexperienced on them Farmall mags so Im out to lunch lol John T
