I never thought it would happen to me but it did! Farmall H got stuck in 5th gear. I came here, researched the archives and found a ton of well written advice! Followed it, pulled the shifter, aligned rails and presto! Took some photos of the shifter when it was out. At first I thought it was really worn on the front but now after reading some more here, I am beginning to think the wear could be on the end of the shifter.
I would like to hear from all the experts as to where the wear really is and the ultimate fix!

Here is other side view.

Also want everyone to know that this site contains a wealth of knowledge. The time taken to dig thru all the past posts about this problem really made the job of pulling this shifter out and fixing (temporary!) the problem a real breeze.

Where you point to the front of the shifter should look exactly like the back of the shifter. I've never seen one worn so bad.

It's hard to describe, but the shifter as I've built them back up, would have squared off edges (but not in square), and both the sides and the front and back would all be tapered.

If I still smoked (a hair better than a year now), I would take a break and go pull mine out and snap a picture of it. But since I don't anymore, you'll have to wait until I need to stretch my legs. I haven't put the new pin in yet, so it only takes 2 seconds to remove.

Ok - these aren't perfect pictures, but you should get the idea. Also, I should add that I never saw a 'good' one when I did my first one, but what I did worked, as I've never had problems since.

In this picture, you will see that both the front and rear of what I call the spoon are identical. It should be wider towards the top of the spoon, and narrower at the bottom. It should have good crisp edges.

In this picture, you can see the edge, or the part that actually engages the rails. This should have a bit of a shoulder on the top of the spoon (can't see it in the picture) and should taper towards the bottom as shown, again with good crisp edges.

Your shifter spoon should look symetrical when done. Look for clues in it before you start building it up with weld. There will be parts with no wear at all, and those are the ones to use as a guide. I built mine up with weld, and ground it back to this shape.

Good luck!

Thanks Jay
Pictures look good to me and I can see what has to be done. Now I wonder why mine is so worn on the front and not so bad on the back? I don't know much about this tractor, it was restored by someone else and when PO got it(before restoration)it had a loader on it.
Would be much pleased if you could email pictures to me, then I can blow them up a bit to help me in building mine up.
Thanks a lot for your help!

I'd appreciate it too if you could post a pic of a good shifter when you get a chance. Planning on building mine up soon.

I can wait, Jay. Sure would be nice to see a picture of a good one. Quit smoking myself in '91, still have the urge yet but I can at least control it now.
