I parked my 1953 Farmall H for the night and when I got up the next morning I had no 1,2,3,4 or reverse. Only 5th gear works. Also the PTO spins but I can stop it by grabing it with my hand and the hydrolics do not work. I checked the clutch and it is not slipping. I drained and refilled the transmission with new oil. Any suggestions.

Before anyone goes and grabs a turning pto use your heads, a split second of foolishness can hurt you for the reset of your life, weather the pto is engaged or not.

Pull the shift lever and check the rails.

You're just going to have to learn how to farm at 15 MPH.

I'm gonna take a different path here. I have stacked the gears in my H before and only had 5th gear. Before I started taking any major parts off, I would pull the shifter and make sure this is not the case. I have found that Murphy's law sometimes should read"If you try to fix a major problem, it will be a simple one". Just a thought...Kevin

For some reason the transmission countershaft is not being driven. (The countershaft runs gears 1 thru 4, reverse, the belly pump and the PTO - only in 5th gear is the countershaft not used)

Sounds like either the key in the countershaft input gear has sheared, or the countershaft constant mesh gear (or it's mating gear on the mainshaft) has been stripped. Unfortunately either one means the transmission's gotta be torn down for repair.

Thanks Bob M I think you got it nailed. If I leave the clutched ingaged I can hear 1-4 and reverse buzz just a little when I shift so it is shifting just no drive. That is why only having 5 gear puzzled me. Now that I know that 5th is not in the same train. I will have to make the time to tear the trans down.

Learn something new everyday. But I have a question Bob. He says that his PTO does turn, so how is this possible with the scenerio you describe?

Jay, the heavy oil in the transmission case will cause the pto to turn, especially when it's cold.

Good observation Jay! - If the PTO turns but can be stopped by grabbing with the hand, that tells me the gears have NOT stripped. Rather it points to a sheared Woodruff key in constant mesh gear.

Reason: With the countershaft key sheared there's still enough friction between the gear hub and the countershaft for the gear to "drag" the shaft around when it's unloaded. However without the key it cannot transmit any significant torque. Thus the countershaft is turning but can be stopped by grabbing the PTO shaft.

Gotcha! Thanks!

My pto used to turn all the time - but when I put in new seals it stopped.

Fifth in the tranny is not a gear as such, it is a coupling between the input shaft and output shaft, bypassing much of the real gearing. I would remove the belt pulley drive (if it has one) or the cover at that location, and attempt to see problems from there. The fact that the hyd doesnt work is troublesome. in that it is powered by the counter shaft of the trans. Good luck.
