third party image

Here's another picture. This is beneath the gas tank, forward of the sediment bowl. You can see an arm with two holes in it on the near side of the tractor. This arm goes thru a bracket underneath the gas tank and there is another offset arm with holes in it that should be visible (sort of, it is visible in front of sediment bowl and points backwards) on the far side of the tractor. It is all one arm and swings in the bracket...if that makes any sense. Kinda curious as to what that is and how it functioned when the rest of it was there as it is obviously incomplete.

That is part of the pneumatic lift all system. No the cycl didnot carbon up. Mite have rusted because tractor was not inside. If oil was used as the manual said the piston would never seize. My DAD bought a B and had the cult installed brand new it was used from 48-62 wjth the corn and beans we planted it covered 300A per yr never had any problems did replace the o-ring in the valve assy yearly. Kept the cycl lubed and tractor NEVER set outside. You will never convince me these systems didnt work. I use three of them plowing and cultivating some sweet corn patches for neighbors just having fun using 60pluss yr stuff.

Well Gene, you're the A & B guy...or at least the guy with the biggest collection I know of! If you say they work good then I may have to look at getting the parts together one day and trying to get one working. Probably cost me more than the tractor but like I told you before, if it was about the money I guess I would collect something else! Shoot me an e-mail when you get the pics I sent you and I will give you a call.

Dave

It is definitely a lever for the exhaust lift-all. I have the exact same thing on my 1946 A, even thought the rest of the rig has been long gone. The operator pulled a rod which operated this lever which in turn closed the flap in the attachment on top of the manifold. That caused exhaust to travel through a pipe to the the lift-all valve and to the cylinder. My uncle told me that it worked pretty well, but it was slow and the exhaust corroded the cylinder fairly rapidly. It was allegedly cheaper than hydraulics, but not much of an alternative. It seems the old hand lifts worked just as well.

Well, I figured it had to be that even if I could not find it in the picture. I looked at adding one of these to the tractor but I honestly find them to be uglier than sin and the maintenance headaches seemed more trouble than it was worth.
Appreciate all the responses! I'll close the book on that one.

The lever operates the butterfly assembly that should be on top of the exhaust manifold to divert exhaust gases to the lift valve.

Well, maybe.....but I am looking at the parts of the lift-all as portrayed in the back of the owners manual and I don't recognize that swinging arm configuration in the picture. Arm has a big spring on it up under the gas tank. Still trying to figure this one out.

Keep in mind that "barnyard customizations" were very common, and the things you're posting are not necessarily "stock" items that are missing/incomplete.

The term "farmerized" comes to mind and I got to tell you that I dearly love a tractor with a clever innovation added by a "cornfield engineer"!
Don't think either of these pictures falls into that category, however. Picture #1 is obviously an original part of the tractor and pic #2 is just too well made and fits in there too good.

My B has the exact same part as you have (near the sedement bowl). I have no Idea what it is for, but apparently it is an original part or somehow the same guy customized your tractor and mine :)
