I discovered today that the 41 H I just started on also pops out of fifth. How big of a job?

I have a Super H, torn down for this very problem. Most likely your 4th/5th slider gear, and maybe other problems as well. You are probably looking at a fairly complete transmission tear down and overhaul. On mine, in addition to the 4th/5th speed sliding gear, the bearings on the input shaft are shot and the main shaft bearing at the rear of the top shaft could probably be used, but has some play and I am replacing it along with the pinion bearing as well.

Could be as simple as removing the top platform, seat, gas tank, steering post, belt pulley then lifting the platforum off flip it upside down. Find the fourth and fifth slider (shift rail) should be 2 balls and 2 springs under it. If only 1 replace both spring probably broke. Reassemble (but first examine the tranny while you are that far).

You say also pops fifth. If it was just fifth I agree with slappy I would say 4th 5th slider gear. I have replaced two on Hs in the past 5th slides over the top and the gear teeth are on the under side of the gear. . But If its the shifter its a lot easier and cheaper fix so I would tery that first. JON

If it turns out not to be the shifter, you will probably find that your 5th gear is worn and needs to be replaced with a good used gear (seems to me I've seen some new gears advertized as well). The teeth are short on 5th and once they get some wear on them its common to have the tractor pop out of gear.
