I put a new thermestat in the tractor and it doesn't warm up very much. When i took the old one out it was stuck open and the gauge didn't move off the cold line, put in new one and it hardly moves much more. I put the new seal in housing where the old one was and it is full with water. The heat from heater is only luke warm. What did i do wrong? Thanks for any help.

Alvin,

For some reason, I get the feeling you are just setting there with it running waiting for it to warm up? It ain't gonna happen.

Two things:

First make darned sure you have all the air out of the system 'cause pushin' the coolant up to that heater doesn't work with any air trapped inside.

Secondly, diesels don't generate a lot of heat until they are pulling.

That 986 has a large engine with a huge cooling capacity. The bypass system alone could probably cool any car on the road.

Put a load on that tractor and I'll bet she warms right up.

Dunno, but I don't think you did anything wrong; just have to get it purged and working hard.

I think the first thing I'd do is run 'er up the road about 3 miles wide open and see how it is at that point.

Allen-- I have been around a long time, worked with our first diesel back in '51 with a MD. I worked this 986 on a 20 foot field cultivator on sod for 7 hours and the temp gauge only got half way to the green . the air is purged out of heater lines, I know about that also, and the air is only warm coming from the heater. I just think I got a bum thermstat for thr $30 it cost. So the information you passed on is only valuable for a yuppie farmer.

I would put that new thermostat in pan of water and heat it over the stove. Use a meat thermometer or something similar to try and determine if the thermostat is opening at the correct temperature. The temp should be stamped
on the thermostat. It may be defective. Don't forget the sensing bulb on the thermostat should face toward the engine. Hal
