Recently I was told about adding Acetone to either gasolene and/or diesel fuel to improve mileage and performance. Two men I know said they had just started doing it and were really impressed.

So I went to the internet and GOOGLE where I typed in "ACETONE" and up came a number of acetone hits. One was "Acetone In fuel Said to increase mileage" by Louis LaPointe. It will certainly get your attention. I copied it off (12 pages).

HERE IS THE QUESTION - Has anyone here used acetone in their fuel and what was their evaluation of it????? ?

I'm reasonably certain that acetone has a lower BTU value than regular gasoline. If so, I don't see how it can be the magic elixer that some claim it to be.
Different engines WILL respond differently to changes in fuel mixture, driving habits, climate conditions, altitude variations, etc. I have serious doubts that acetone, moth balls, or other common household chemicals can be dumped into the gas (or diesel) tank and produce gains in either horsepower or mileage across the board.
When someone sets up a controlled, scientific study on this stuff, let me know.

They claim its not the BTU value,but the cleaning properties and "tension breaking" ability of the Acetone that makes fuel burn more completely,making more efficient use of the fuel there is to burn.
I would like to think that there is something to this....but I am still skeptical.
How come this is the first time I have ever heard of this....Acetone in gasoline...Where was all this talk when gas went over $1.00 for the first time? This LaPointe guy who has supposibly used Acetone since the 1950s...how old is he now? 50+20 would be 70+ years old.And where did he ever get the idea to use Acetone in the first place? Surely was no internet or infomercials back then.With gas at 19-29 cents a gallon,I cant believe any cheapskate would try to eek out more gas mileage back then.Gas consumption just wasnt much of an issue back then....hence the inception of the OHV American V8 during the 50s...not small 4 cylinder 30+ mpg subcompacts.....(The Henry J/Crosley wasnt a big seller afterall).

YOU ADD 2 OZ. PER TEN GALLONS OF GAS.IF YOUR TANK HOLDS 20 GALLONS, THEN YOU PUT IN 4 OZ.WHEN YOU FILL UP. IF IT TAKES TEN GALLONS THE NEXT TIME YOU FILL UP, THEN ADD ANOTHER 2 OZ.I AM ADDING IT EVERY TIME I FILL UP. I DID RUN ONE TANK THAT I DIDN,T ADD THE ACETONE TO AND MY MILEAGE DROPPED ABOUT THREE MPH FROM THE PREVIOUS TANK. IT WORKES FOR ME. VETTE

I HAVE TRIED THE ACEONE AND CAN TELL YOU, MY MILEAGE HAS INCREASED. I HAVE A 1999 DODGE 1/2 TON WITH 318CU. ENG. THAT I BOUGHT NEW. GAS MILEAGE HAS ALWAYS BEEN HORRIABLE TO SAY THE LEAST.MY MILEAGE INCREASED FROM JUST OVER 10 MPG TO 14.5 AND IN TOWN FROM 8 MPG TO ANYWHEREFROM 9.4 TO 12.5. A FRIEND OF MINE TRIED IT IN HIS 2000 DODGE 360 CU. AND INCREASED FROM 14.5 HIGHWAY TO 18.2. I TOO ASKED ALL THE QUESTIONS ABOUT "O" RINGS, SEALS, ETC. AND THE TESTS THAT HAD BEEN, AND IS STILL BEING PERFORMED SHOW NO NEGITIVE RESULTS. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ONE FOR "GIMMICS", ESPECIALLY THE ONES YOU HAD TO BUY. THE ACETONE INFORMATION WAS PASSED ON TO ME WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED. I HAVE BEEN ADDING IT TO MY TANK FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND HAVE NO PLANS TO STOP AS LONG AS MY MPG,S STAYS UP. FOR ANYONE THAT HASN,T READ THE ARTICLE IT,S PRETTY INTERESTING EVEN IF OU DON,T TRY IT.

Wow! That's really impressive! Have you heard that there are carburetors out there that will allow you to get 200 MPG? I hope the big auto companies don't find out about this before we all get a chance to take advantage of this great windfall and buy up this idea too.

My '99 Ram 1500/318 gets great mileage when I don't drive it unnecessarily. Some day I plan to add up all the fuel I've bought for it since new and do the math using real world data. Until then, I'll be skeptical of mileage claims from short term tests.

It also helps tremendously if you drive with a light foot while testing any product. When you want to run straight gas be sure to drive faster. MPG is guaranteed to drop without the product, thus making it look good.

how much are you adding to the fuel?? I've heard that you add 1-2 oz. to 10 gal.,is this about right or do you add more than that???Also do you use it every tank full or every other tank full ???

Not trying to be a smarta&& but I think Acetone costs about $10/gallon, 4 times more then gasoline, the mileage increase would have to be really really good to use it. I know that I bought a quart of Acetone about a year ago and I think it was $2.99 or so. I would think that moonshine or Isopropel alc. would be cheaper.

You don't use straight acetone as the fuel. You mix the acetone with gasoline, at the rate of 3 ounces acetone to 10 gallons of gasoline. If you gain 2 to 4 mpg., as some folks have, then the acetone is pretty cheap.

I have been using it for about 12 years now.In the form of berrymans B12 chemtool. I use it at the rate of I qt about three times a year just to keep water out and injectors clean. I have also used it in the motor oil of my H before a rebuild to help clean the motor of sludge worked well. But I dont see advantages of running it more my self. Actually I could see more harm on an old motor being that it loosens so much carbon and crap in the intake and valves. If you used it on a new vehicles periodicle I am sure it would keep the valves and injectors and such super clean. But maybe once a month not at every fill up. JON

I'll fess up, I tried it, in both my '01 one ton and in the '02 trailblazer, it didn't do anything in either vehicle, couldn't even tell it was in the tank. Please don't let my results discourage anyone from trying it, I know for a fact that it is working for some folks, maybe they are using a different brand of gas?

Mowing lawn for a certain period of time with 120 cu, in. engine I used 90 oz. with out acetone and 80 oz. with acetone. But then there are always variables. I did fuel on the same spot and had a 1 gal. auxiliary tank .

I have read most of that stuff, and although the principle may be sound, the end result is probably doubtful -- this type of thing will show up as fuel prices increase, and they will always say that the oil companies want to keep it a secret -- whereas if it really worked they would probably sell more gas, not less. Rather than try it myself I am going to wait for proof, that is, some sort of a scientific replicated test, rather than testimonials, which are usually worthless. I didn't read the LaPointe article word for word, but he presented no studies other than testimonials. If there is really something to this, documented replicated results will be published and everyone will hear about them. Until then, I remain skeptical. Remember, it is going to take several tanks of gas and many miles before you can believe any test you perform yourself.

Just imagine what acetone WILL do to rubber and plastic parts(NO-THANKS) that is the same ingredient in carb cleaner and you can see what it does to paint???

I'm with CNKS - the facts just aren't there.

First off, you can't get more energy out of something than you put into it - no how, no way.

Secondly, don't you think that some oil exec would have capitalized on it by now and advertised it. Wouldn't everyone go to their station for an extra 10% mileage?

Thirdly - if you had to read this far to make you believe that it's bogus, I have a bridge for you.

Acetone (fingernail polish remover) is not a good prospect. It does burn, but when it does, it is very sooty. When a oxy acetlyene torch is used after the tanks have been moved from sideways to vertical some acetone can cone into the lines, it is not pleasant to purge and contaminates the welds.

Any component in the fuel system with organic (plastic or gasket material, viton rubber)composition can be deteriorated.

I don't know about MPG but up here in Ontario Canada we have a drive clean emissions test we must do on our cars every other year. The ACETONE is added to help you pass. It cleans and give you a better exhaust reading.
