Took the day of to start picking my corn. Got out there with my M hooked to my recently aquired 1-PR picker. I have to say the old picker worked pretty well. Most of the field was pretty good but had a couple of spots where I couldn't pull a mostly loaded wagon - to much mud. Had several occassions where I had to unhook the picker and go back for the wagon. Never got stuck where I had to be pulled out. I can tell you a day of pulling the old machinery through the mud still beats a good day at work.

That sure beats the way we did it when I was growing up. Cutting it by hand and putting the stalks in shocks until was dry. Then we had to husk every ear by hand, what a boring job. Then we had to load the corn on a truck or wagon and haul it into the corn crib and unload it by hand.

You can see why my brother and I left the farm after graduating from high school. You can not beat farm machinery. My late father-in law was always digging his garden by hand. When he died my mother-in-law was fussing about getting the garden dug. I told her I would take care of the garden and I ran a tiller over it a couple of times and walked up and told her the garden was ready to plant. I told her even a mule will turn its butt toward the work. Keep on a picking
corn. Hal
