Farmall M--What Weight Trans Fluid and Need an Oil

I’m still working on getting my Farmall M going—thanks to all those that have helped so far.

I opened the transmission oil level plug on the left side of the tractor, and it was low. I stuck my pinky in there, and couldn’t feel any fluid, so I imagine it’s going to take at least a couple of gallons to top it off.

I’d like to drain the whole system, but I don’t have any way of dealing with 10+ gallons of trans fluid right now, so this is my plan. I’m going to loosen the drain plugs to let any water that’s in the system drain out. (The water should be at the bottom, right?) Then, I’ll add the fluid to top it off.

The manual says 90W oil in the transmission. Anyone know where I can find any 90W oil? I could only find muti-grade oils at the local Farm and Fleet. I think the closest I saw was 80W-90. Can I top off my trans case with a couple of gallons of 80W-90?

Also, the air cleaner oil cup was held on with dirt, grease, and an old hose clamp. I cleaned it off, refilled the oil, but the clamp hasn’t got the tension to hold it on.

Where can I get my hands on a new clamp for the air cleaner oil cup?

I got a new clamp from my IH dealer. Is 85, 90-140 GL 5 from IH ok for the transmission?

To handle the 13 gallons of oil, go to WalMart or Dollar General, etc and get one of those plastic Rubbermaid storage containers that will hold 15 gallons. I've been using the same one for this for 5 years and it has not leaked yet. Biggest problem is transferring the oil to 5 gallon cans for disposal. You can syphon it or get a cheap transfer pump designed for kerosine.

65-205 is 90 WT. GL 1 in 5 gal. pail at Napa .
Cost was around $25.00 not long ago. I believe this is what tractor had in it when new.

Most of the water will be mixed with the oil--the oil will be a dirty brownish white color. Drain it all out.

If the tractor has been stationary for a few days to a week, the water will collect in the area of the plug. It is better to get contaminated fluid out of the gear case, as stated below, however leaving the water in is worse by far than doing as you plan. Multi wt. oil is not a problem.

Yes, I have seen pitted bull gears from setting in water for likely years without movement.

I just did this little trick on my M. Had no problem finding straight 90 wt. at my local oil and fuel distributor here in Missouri. As far as draining the transmission case just get a 5 gal bucket and some smaller plastic jugs (I used 2.5 gal in size) and drain out about 4 gallons in the 5 gal bucket. Put the drain plug back in and pour the 5 gal. bucket into the other smaller jugs using a large funnel. Fill the bucket again and I think you have the picture. A little messy but just put some cardboard under the drain plug and bucket to catch any drips and small spills.
If you have contaminated gear lube I would highly suggest getting it all out and maybe even pour some diesel or even better kerosene through to flush it out. Let is drain completely using both drain plugs before putting in the new gear oil.
If you can't find a new air cleaner clamp click on my name on this post and I'll find a source in one of my catalogs. They can easily be located but might be a reproduction unless you go the salvage yard route. Might even contact the Nebraska Cowman who is a frequent person on this forum and a great person to deal with on used parts. Have fun. Hal

Check with the store where you buy your oil to see if they will take the old oil. Advance Auto Parts does. If so, put in milk jugs and take to them. PS: It is "Gear Oil" not "transmission oil." Gear oil should be easier to get rid of.

80 -90W is what I use in all my tractors. As for the clamp I would check local junk yards. Alot of the times they wont sell just the clamp. However alot of times the air clearners rot out and the only thing that is left that is good is the clamp. Thats how I got the clamp for my Super C. Andrew
