A friend of mine just purchased a w-6 that will not start. It sat for 5 years.Ignition appears ok.Old fuel was drained and refilled with new.Fuel will drain back out of carb from air inlet side after trying to start. It will puff slight amount of exhaust when trying to start.Any thoughts or ideas would be more than welcome.Thank You

If it sat that long I'd put about a 1/4-1/2 cup of tranny fluid in each cylinder and let it sit over night or longer to loosen up the rings and valves.

For starters I would install a new set of sparkplugs. The carburetor may be gummed up from that fuel being left in the tractor. This may be keeping the float from shutting off the flow of gas. A carburetor cleaning is probably needed. Hal

Thank you all for the help.We took the bottom half of the carb. off and cleaned it.Did not take other section off. Will the governor section be a problem? Will that unhook easily? A 1/4 cup of fuel would run out of the carb inlet if it were cranked 10 seconds and stopped. We are going to put new plugs in this week. The engine sounds fine when turning over.

You need to take good notes and a few closeup pictures as to how that governor is connected so you can reinstall it correctly. That carburetor
should probably be soaked in carburetor cleaner
and have all the jets blown out. It may even need
a carburetor repair kit. You need to make sure the float is set at the correct height and that it doesn't rub against the body of the carb. Hal
PS: Shake that float to see if it has a pin hole
and has gas in it too. Could be your flooding
problem.

Pull the valve cover and make sure that all the valves are loose, none sticking open.
