To rebuild or not to rebuild an engine

I have a friend who just purchased an W4. It starts perfectly, has 50+ oil pressure when warm full speed at idle about 35lbs. It has a slight oil leak in the rear engine seal not sure if its from just sitting around for so long. He wants to paint it and use it for just shows. I come from a restoration background of tearing everything down and making like or better than new( expensive and you never get ahead ) So I'm not the one to ask the question to. I thought I would throw it out to fellow tractor owners before I answered him.He wanted to know if he should tear down the engine and re gasket it , have the head reworked and possibly put new sleeves/pistons. He doesnt want to have a great paint job and double back later . I feel its fine I see no other oil leaks But I suggested a clutch only due to a vague history and the tractor looks all original.

What to you fellows feel about this?

Thanks for your responses

ED

It's all a matter of opinion -- if he wants a restored tractor with a rebuilt engine, that's ok. A simple compression test should be done first. If that's ok, leave it alone -- if he's willing to risk the bearings, etc. Others want unrestored tractors, that's ok too. I do tractors as a hobby, not for the money. I have no problem with Steven's comments, below. But, I fix "most" of what needs to be done, completely disassemble, strip to bare metal and paint. Any body filler I use will never fall out, because I keep it very thin. The decals are correct. Most repainted tractors I see for sale are disaster areas.

Personally, I would like to see pictures. We are getting to a point where tractors in original condition (unrestored, haven't been repainted) or in their "work clothes" are going to be worth more money than a restored example. I also feel they are more interesting unrestored.

Why unrestored worth more? Too many poor restorations with better than original paint jobs, incorrect decals, bondo over the spot welds, etc. Of course these are just my thoughts, time may prove me wrong.

Leave it just like it is. Drive the tractor, get acquainted with it, and then decide what should be done. A good running W4 will get attention at shows, even if it is wearing its work clothes.
