Brakes stopped working and it looks like there is oil on the brakes somehow. What could be the cause? Any ideas?

The question was what caused the gear oil to leak out on the brakes.

Remove the oil level plug on the left side of the differential. Excess oil in the differential is a common cause of the oil seal leaking. If you have excess, drain and refill to the oil level plug.

You may still have to clean up the brake linings and replace the seals.

Pull the final drives. replace the seals making sure they ride on a fresh portion of axle by driving the new seals a little deeper than the old. If you still have a good amount of brake material on the bands then drive the oil off them with a torch and put them back on. If not, replace the brakes while you have it apart. Take care that the axle does not distort the new seals by using a sling to install the final drives.

Could be seals. And could be to much oil in the transmission/rear end. And/or condensation (water)accumulating in rear end. Drain and refill to plug on side of housing.

Probably have bad seals in the tranny/dif. area. Replaced a set last summer on a cub because of the same problem.
