Pulley allignment '48 Cub Belly Mower

I have a '48 CUB that been in the family for 30 years. I recently purchased a used 42" single spindle belley mower to use on it. I can not stop two problems 1) the belt rides up the PTO sheave (front side towards the tractor)and rolls over 2) shortly afterwards the belt will disengage. The belt will stay on from 10 sec to 2 hrs but only once for this longer duration. Most durations are less than 1 minute.

To solve the first problem I thought I needed to move the PTO sheave forward to get the belt to run in the center. This does not seem possible as I run out of PTO drive shaft before I seem to get in allignment.

I have just purchased two new idler sheaves and a new belt. Befor I ruin the new belt I wanted to ask for advise.

Any there any tricks for allignment and belt tensioning. Thanks in advance for all help

Your idler pulleys may have been replaced with smaller diameter pulleys by a previous owner. That will cause some belt mis-alignment. Larger diameter idlers will improve alignment with the drive pulley. Also take a good look at the belt to see if the spine of the belt shows any signs of broken belt cords. Try turning the belt around so it runs in the other direction. Sometimes it helps.
