Bought a 706 gasser a few years ago from a local tractor jockey. He assured me it was in fine shape and that he had seviced it so it was ready to go to the field. Got it home and started to service it myself and the air filter must have been original because the paper had already broken down and big chuncks of it were gone. It ran great! Just had to add oil every day!

See, that's the problem. These things are built to be so bullet-proof, that they'll still run and work even with all sort of abuse.

Allan, I don't think the gassers had inner filters.

KB,

They didn't? Could be; first gasser other than the little H that I've ever owned. :>)

I checked the seal and it had a good solid contact, so am hoping that all we got was "too much fuel" rather than a bunch of dirt on top of everything else.

Allan, check your 686 once. I'm thinking that all of those tractors in that 656 family, gas or diesel, only had one air filter too. I know a 706 gas only has one.

My 706 gasser, 686 diesel, and 756 diesel do not have the inner filter. I would feel a lot better if there was a way to add one, A dusted diesel's not cheap to fix.

Hi Scott,

Boy, I sure don't know. The little stand-off bracket is in there and I can see tracks where one was installed at one time.

I thought all IHs from the 06s upwards had the two filters? Maybe it was the 66 series upwards? Or perhaps just the diesels? :>(

Dunno, but this is the first IH tractor I've ever seen without both filters; but like I say, I've never owned a gasser before either.

That ain't to bad , i had to go down into the hills of souther carroll county a number of years ago to see why this old 1030 case ahru was smoken better then a super stocker first thing i checked was the air filter it had been in there so long and was so packed that it was all i could do with two good sized pry bars to get it out. Tractor ran much better with a new filter. To this day i do not know how it even ran.

These old red buggers are just tough!

Perhaps he did me a favor and kept me from findin' a burnt valve, who knows? Should been gettin' enough fuel to run plumb cold. :>)

'Er..... .....washed the liners. :>(

None of this new stuff seems to last like the old ones use to in the good old days.

You probably don't even need them. Just through them away and go carefree on your way (maybe for a day or two).
