Anyone have any experience doing it. My 80 year Father-in law uses it once a month maybe. Every time he uses it the battery is down or it will not start until the battery has run down. He then hand cranks it in about 10 minutes. I thought it would be easier to convert to 12 volts and then he can jump it off with his truck. Any thoughts and insights.

As the others suggest a Super A will crank up just fine on the stock 6 volt system - even after sitting idle for several months.

Key is to have a good battery, starter and ignition. Also vitally important are properly sized battery cables with clean, solid terminals. (None of those 6 ga aftermarket cables sold in the discount parts places - they are WAY too small to work on 6 volt system!)

And of course healthy charging system to KEEP the battery charged!

However if you still want to do an alternator conversion punch below for a step-by-step.

I would agree what Randy has suggested. You need to have that battery checked for a weak cell. Install heavy duty battery cables, new points, condenser and plugs. New plug wires too if they haven't been changed lately. Check your charging
system so the battery is being charged when being used. All connections on that battery need to be shiny clean & tight. That includes the ground surface & at the starter. Hal

What is considered a heavy-duty battery cable for a 6V system? 1/0, 2/0 heavy or fine wire? Our Tractor Supply Co. only sells standard automotive cables.

Here is a great article put on here a while back on what you needed and how to do the conversion on a M, which most everything should be the same as your A...

I would use 2/0 and they're probably available
where truck-tractor parts are sold. The battery warehouse in our area will make them for you.
Here's a web site for battery cables. Hal
PS: Do not make them any longer than needed.

Bob M has an excellent drawing on this website for converting to 12v. If you have everything tuned up to snuff on the A then it shouldn't need to be converted to 12 v. I put heavy duty battery cables on my C with 6v and it spins over like a top. The cables have good connections on both ends and has a good ground. The plugs and points are good and it is tuned/timed. Make sure that the carburetor is properly adjusted. My C sets in the shed all winter long and fires right off in the spring. You also need to make sure that the charging system is working properly. Just my $0.02 worth. Randy

12 volt convertion is pretty easy to do. you need a delco 10si alternator and then a battery and just put it on and wire it up. You can also jump start it with 12 volts but never hook a 12 volt battery up to a 6 volt battery or you may have some thing go bang. If you do jump it go right to the starter and to ground but never to battery to battery.

He can jump a 6-volt battery off a 12-volt truck but be sure that the ground cable goes to the ground post on the battery. You cannot jump a 12-volt with a 6-volt.
