I've got a '51. I assume the wiring's all the same
and I recently had to re-wire the whole tractor (I had a short in the starter switch & before I could shut off the switch it burned out most of my original wiring) I took the starter apart & fixed it first, then spent most of the day replacing all the wiring. The only thing I got wrong was the connections to my ammeter; It would show a discharge while the tractor was at high idle with no lights on. I simply reversed the connections on the ammeter itself & everything seems okay now. I use it quite a bit, and with the unusually cold weather we've been having of late here in Pennsylvania, I'm kinda considering converting to a 12 volt system myself. Lots of times here lately, I've had to enlist the help of one of my teenage boys to get it running. I have a hand crank, so when the starter doesn't have enough juice to crank it fast enough, one of the boys will spin it around with the crank enough to get the oil flowing, then it always starts with the starter (sometimes they even get it to start with just the crank). They might not always be around the place here to help though, at least when I need to use it, so... Did you get yours wired up so it's charging? I got a book from Jen Sales on the wiring & electrical specs for early Cubs for not much money. Let me know if I can help

Jim if you are leaving it 12 volt positive, just make sure to replace the light bulbs and stick a resistor in the coil line so the coil is getting 6 volts. Other than that it should wire the same as it is now. Starter will simply spin faster.

If you are going to 12 volt negative, swap the wires on the coil and the ampmeter if you have one.
