New project, I'm thinking trailer hauler with powerstroke diesel. Anybody have any leads on parts? I'm gonna need a new windshield, the flat glass I can have cut. I'll get pictures in a few days. Would the existing frame be heavy enough or should I drop the cab and box on a whole nother chassis? Also any hints on axle ratios? I plan to use a 5 speed overdrive as I hate automatics. Wanna get the best fuel economy pulling a 12,000 pound trailer.

The A110 is a 1957 half ton pickup. You need a heavier frame and running gear for your application such as a 120 (3/4 ton) or 130 (1 ton). 5800 GVW sticks in my mind as the heavest GVW for 110 with all HD options.

I bought a 73 1210 from a Fire Dept.Real nice truck but the box behind the cab was rusted out. Since I bought a 100 for parts as it had a camper on it and the floor was perfect, Anyway all the glass is good,in fact the doors are good and the seat is real good. My FD truck also had several holes drilled in the dash for their equipt. So I will repaint the dash metal and use it. If you can use any of this let me know. Seiverttrees@Aol.com

Hi NC,

I can't help with the A110 but depending on which PSD you want to use. Mine is a 02 F350 PSD with a ZF6spd, 3.73, DRW, 4wd, and with 26kGCW at 1800rpm I had no problem maintaining 60mph on flat roads in 6th(OD) and 5th gear on the small hills.

The 02 PSD makes 520ft/lbs at 1600rpm and 275hp@2800rpm. Other years, 99'+, are slightly less with the 03 7.3 slightly more.

I added a 2nd tractor for 31kGCW and that was too much for this truck. I now had to use 2250rpm to 2500rpm (turbo rpm) to maintain 60mph. I was also fighting a 30mph headwind.

I normally pull my RV, 16kGCW, at 1600rpm on the flats and 1800rpm on the 8% grades. At 1800rpm the turbo adds just a tad of boost and makes a huge difference in climbing the grades.

I drive for maximum fuel ecomony at all times so most of my travels is at 1600rpm as this yeields the best fuel mileage.

The Ford ZF6spd is a piece of junk and shifts like one. Also the stock Ford or LUK clucth is too weak for the PSD. Both Rockwell and Southbend build a clutch rated at 11ooft/lbs or enough to last in a PSD.

Personally I would look at a older mechanical injected diesel with a turbo as then you can run B100 or home made fuel where the PSD will have a few problems with back yard fuel.

I would also look at a Eaton 18spd auto-shift tranny as then you can have a double OD for great fuel ecomony plus have a 17% ratio spread. The autoshift needs a clutch to stop and start but up/down shifts like a fluid automatic but with gears and no clutch to shift. It shifts by rpm that you program in and can change at will.

I have a neighbor that uses a 6cyl Ford tractor engine in his pick-up. He stated the engine has worn out two pick-ups and now working on it's 3rd truck. He keeps the engine & tranny and fuel componets and changes the rest of the truck.

Just a thought, but why not keep it all IH? I don't know who owns it, but I have seen a later model IH 3/4 ton with an engine from a 1206 dropped in and bolted up to the original 5 speed transmission.

You better sell alot of parts for that Stroke, good used one is going to run 3 or 4 grand, over 10000 for a new one, plus another grand or so for all the computers, sensors and wiring. But.....it would be a good choice if youre willing to spend the money.

At the VERY least, I'd be looking for a 120 [3/4 ton] or 130 [1 ton] frame with the same wheelbase to set the body on...OR I'd be boxing that frame before swapping the 'Stroker motor in. IH sixes were around 750 lbs, vs. probably 900+ for the powerstroke, so plan accordingly.

If you box the frame, you can probably go to some springs off a 120 or 130 series, and you'll be OK...the IH corporate rear end was pretty stout, but if in doubt, swap in a Dana 60 with 8-lug pattern from a 3/4 Ford or Dodge--not sure what you'd have to swap in to make the front hubs compatible, probably a trial-and error thing there, or a front straight axle from a '69-up International might work. Then you'd have an A-series BinderTruck to be proud of!

Try the Harmon Glass website for the windshield.

Cowman isn't the A110 a half-ton? and if it is I think I would go the "put this cab and bed" on a different chassis route. I think the powerstroke amd 5-speed with 3.73 gears would handle that 12,000 lb load plenty good. I haul with a '97 Ford 3/4 ton with a 460 gas with automatic with 3.73 gears and it doe's a fine jod. Have a good day. Tom

Have seen 92-93 Dodge 3/4 advertised for around 4000 with cummins engine. Find one of those with a beat up cab and put your cab on it. mechanical engine and it will ride just as rough as an old IHC.
