I need to make some very thin (.004" - .006") gaskets. NAPA doesn"t sell gasket material that thin. Any suggestion on what type of paper works, or what doesn"t? Or is paper, paper?

Thanks, Larry

That is like the Sportster oil pump.I have never chanced making that gasket due to the critical thickness.I guess they dont want any sealer on that one also?Cant you still get the factory one?Be careful to mike out any paper you choose.Im pretty sure that goes on dry with no sealer. If too thin the gears will scrape the cover.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The service manual gives the correct gasket thicknesses. In this case, the gasket controls end clearance in a gear pump so I need to stay in the .004 to .006 range. Time to start cutting!

50 to 65# Kraft paper will make good gaskets. You should be able to get it, by the roll or sheet (24 x 36) through most decent office supply stores.

Doc, I needed gasket for hydraulic pump, which looked like onion paper, called a friend, who is a Hyster Mech. He brought me some gasket gel put out by Hyster Unisource, Loctite, part no. 313022...Called "Gasket Maker"...HTH

Doc Larry, as has been suggested file folders work very well and art paper called manilla tag which is very similair to file folders will make great gaskets. Years ago I was told about brown paper bags being used to make gaskets for early v-8 Fords..it doesn't take much to make a seal between two surfaces...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Many many gaskets have been made from the cover of a sears and roebuck catalog. Just as many have been cut from a brown paper grocery sack.

I've used file folder paper for oil pump gaskets and haven't had a problem. I have some that are tan in color and have kind of a smooth semi- glossy surface. They are about .006 thick.

I think that a company named Accu-trim makes a plastic shim from .ooo5 to .o10 thickness. use it at work a lot. do a search for plastic shim.

At the suggestion from someone here, I went to a gasket distributer in my area, and they GAVE me some vegetable based stuff that was paper thin, which I used to seal the fuel pump cover plate. Worked great. Don't remember what it was called. It had a crinkly texture.

It's been used since the turn of the century, said the employee.

Always best to use Case-IH gaskets if you can find them, for something that thin.
