RECENTLY PURCHASED 806 DIESEL I'VE HAD IT ABOUT A MONTH AND HAVEN'T DONE MUCH WITH IT YET. I STARTED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY SINCE FREEZING TEMPS AND HAD NO HYDRAULICS AT ALL,BRAKES,STEERING ETC. CHECKED THE HYD FLUID AND IT IS BROWN AND WHITE GOO. CHANGED FLUID AND FILTER TODAY. NOW EVERYTHING WORKS GOOD. MY QUESTIONS THOUGH HOWEVER ARE THAT IT ONLY DRAINED ABOUT FIVE GALLONS OUT AND FIVE GALLONS FILLED IT. MY IT MANUAL SAYS IT HOLDS 17 GAL. THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOT TO ME ANYWAY. WHATS GOING ON? BUT NOW FOR THE BAD STUFF. WHEN I DRAINED THE FLUID I GOT SOME METAL PIECES IN THE PAN. A COUPLE OF PIECES THAT I'M SURE ARE NEEDLE BEARINGS AND SOME SMALL TIN LOOKING PIECES. THE PTO ON THIS TRACTOR HAD BEEN TORN UP BY SOMETHING AND WAS REBUILT BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. WOULD PARTS FROM THIS MAKE IT INTO THE HYD OIL AND MAYBE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT? TRANS SEEMS A LITTLE LOUD IN HIGHER GEARS BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS PROBABLY NORMAL. ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. THIS TRACTOR IS A BIG STEP UP FROM MY SUPER H AND 450. I HOPE IT ISN'T GONNA BECOME AN AWFUL EXPERIENCE.

Keep in mind that the final drives on an 806 are sealed from the main transmission case. If you drain them they will have to be refilled indivdually by the plug about half way up on the housing. They hold 6 quarts each.

Brown and white goo? White goo is water, most likely from condensation inside the transmission and differential case. Good thing you did in changing fluid and filter. You should have drained much more fluid than 5 gallons, unless that was all that was in it. 17 gallons is the capacity of the transmission and differential case. To completely drain the trans. and diff. case two plugs are removed. One on the bottom center of rear end ,the other on bottom center of clutch housing( center section of tractor ).Your tractor does have a dipstick in the transmission / hydraulic filler tube doesn't it ? I would drain the tractor again , both plugs , then refill with the specified amount of fluid. Start tractor ,let run a few minutes then check fluid level on transmission dipstick and add more if neccessary. It does not hurt to fill over the full mark. I do it because I run tractors on some very steep land cutting hay. About the metal fragments that you found , they were most likely related to the PTO damage and repair. I would not be concerned .

I JUST TOOK OUT THE FRONT TWO DRAIN PLUGS UNDER THE TRANNY, ONE IN FRONT OF THE OTHER. I NEVER KNEW THERE WERE SO MANY. WOULDN'T YOU THINK WHEN THE PTO WAS REBUILT THE OIL WOULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED? I AM A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE IT MANUAL FOR THIS TRACTOR. IT LEAVES ALOT OF STUFF OUT. THE ONE FOR MY 450 EXPLAINS ALOT MORE.

You need an Operator's Manual for your 806. There are several sources for manuals. This site has them listed for $36.95. Money well spent.

It's rare not to get some small meatal pieces from the trans when you pull the filter and yes they could be from the pto as they are in a common reservoir. Did you pull all 5 or 6 drain plugs or just one? You should get at least 14 gallons out. If the oil was as bad as you stated I would change it again even if I had gotten all of it out, as you never do get the last couple of gallons out. Make sure to drop the three point when draining. There is a plug at the front of the trans, one in the middle of the trans, one under the rear end hidden by the drawbar, one on each final drive and one on the PTO. Good luck. Jake

We also have an 806 Farmall Diesel, from what I've read on this site, and other places the 806 is one of the most durable tractors I.H. ever built. I have read in the archives on this site that you never want to run it low on hydraulic fluid, or you could end up with a pile of scrap. The whining is pretty common with these, as far as I know shouldn't be anything to worry about. I don't know about the needle bearing pieces you found though. They don't always shift the smoothest either. Check out the archives on this site about this tractor. It is quite a step up from a Super H. Have fun!!!!

Those needle bearings you are talking about could actually be the rollers from the shift mechanism in the top of the tranny. If so, the should be round and about the diameter to put your pinky through. Most likely they will be split in half, etc. Not a big deal if so.
