My father has a IH 1486 with the cab and dual wheels. I told him I would like to restore the tractor one day. I didn't know if the parts are plentiful for this particular model or if other tractor models will interchange. Really, I would like to replace the cab with an open canopy and have single wheels for easier transporting to shows. Can anyone give me some good resources for obtaining things like canopies, decals, paint, or parts for this particular model? The tractor runs good, but hydraulics need to be reworked. The tractor's rearend gets too hot to touch after plowing. He said something about a valve that might be stuck. Also, it takes a while to lift the disk at the end of the rows using hydraulics.

Thanks again guys for all the feedback. Based on the information and costs associated with this, I might go back to restoring JD 2 cylinders. I guess I'm not ready to tackle this big of a job.

Replacing the cab with an open platform is a big job. You would need the entire platform from a 786, which was the only big 86 series to come from the factory with an open platform without a ROPS. Problem is, they only built 1800 786's, so you'll have to search long and hard to ever find one. All 86 series were avalible with an open 4-post ROPS w/ canopy (imagine a cab with no doors or glass), those are uncommon, but definetly not as rare as the 786 open platform. Case-IH dealer can get you just about any part you need. With the hydraulic problems you describe, I would be afraid to run the tractor for any length of time. If the rear end is too hot to touch, just think what that heat is doing to every o-ring and seal in the transmission and hydraulic system, not to mention bearing damage.

I fell in love with the "looks" of a 786 platform, it looks like a "big" little tractor. I've seen like two for sale on fastline.com Sorry to hear so few were built---probably more v-8s sold than that!!! Come to think of it, a 786, with a 550 (or 800!!!) ih v-8, sounds almost perverted!!!

The best source for parts for this tractor is still your friendly neighborhood CaseIH dealer. For bigger parts, your friendly neighborhood tractor salvage yard is also a good source. Because everything is so big and heavy on this tractor, you need to find local sources.

It's one of the later models IH produced, from 1977-1981. Parts are still plentiful, and most of the mechanicals interchange with the earlier '66 series tractors. Some parts will interchange clear back to the '06 series.

As far as putting an open canopy on the tractor, it's no simple feat. Basically, everything above the transmission, from the steering wheel back, needs to be pulled off and replaced because the cab and operator's platform are a single unit.

Working on these tractors isn't like fixing an old M. They have complicated electrical and hydraulic systems, and many of the parts are HEAVY. I hope you have a network of overhead I beams and chain hoists in your shop, as well as a good working knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems. Othewise, you'll do more harm than good, and you should really consider sending the tractor off to the local CaseIH dealer to have repairs made.

Fix it up and farm with it as far as parts go no problem as of yet . The problem with the idea of hauling it to shows is the fact that it is over 8 and a half feet wide and now ah days ya need a oversize load permit to haul it and that is a real PITA ya have to fallow all the rules of hauling and oversize , now you can drive it anywhere even with the duals on as long as ya have the flashers out past the duals.
