ACE plough bottoms (in the UK we call thm bodies )first appeard in the UK on 1940s imported trailer ploughs from the USA I think the ploughs were called NO8s. IH then fitted them to the UK built B8A ploughs in the early 1950s. They also fitted them to the B200 2fw and B300 3fw mounted ploughs for the Farmall BM tractor and the B12 2fw and B13 3fw ploughs for the B250 B275 B414 range of tractors right into the late 1960s. When did IH stop using them in the USA. Any infomation would be intresting as i have a B12 plough with ACE bottoms wich i copete in ploughing matches all over the UK with very sucessfully. Many thanks for any infomation. MJ

Many thanks Hugh and George for your infomation.I have used a Hamilton built NO8 plough and i have parts and instruction book. In the UK IH started building them at Doncaster works in 1947 as the B8A plough When they put CAT2 3 point lift on the BM tractors in 1950 they made the B200 and B300 mounted ploughs using B8A frames and bottoms and fitting a 3 point lift frame. The B12 and B13 ploughs were CAT1 3point lift ploughs with much lighter frames. MJ

Hugh is right. The ACE bottoms were a Canadian bottom for the heavy clay soils in eastern Canada. They were only made in Hamilton, Omtario. I know a few were sold in the US in northwestern Ohio as there are some heavy clay soils there. Massey also made a similar bottom. I have an old hydraulic plow on my Super C and the manual states that ACE, REX, HA, and GA bottoms were all available. The HA and GA bottoms were commonly used on the No 8 Little Genius plow made in the US. It wasn't until the Super Chief HSCX bottoms came out that the US style bottoms became popular in eastern Canada

MJ: I will stand correction if wrong but I don't think the ACE bottoms came out of the US. I was always of the opinion they were European design. In fact I think they are the forerunner of European bottoms we see today. ACE bottoms were also used on other makes of plows. Massey Harris used it extensively. Cockshutt used it some. They were use on IH plows here in Canada, particularly Eastern Canada. I think any North American ACE bottoms were manufactured at Hamilton Ontario.

I base this on several items. If you look at plows here on YT, which are for the most part US plows, very rarely do you see ACE bottoms. I think the Americans used the IH General Purpose bottom. Remember also in the US the No. 8 plow was called Little Genius and it has diagnol cross members between the beams. Here in Canada there is no reference to the plows built at Hamilton being called Little Genius. They were just called a No. 8 tractor plow and they had perpendicular cross members that overlaped thus making the plow adjustable for width of cut per furrow.

Two other options on the Hamilton built trailer plows were adjustable levers and reduction gear on the lever settings. The adjustable levers were hinged in middle having 3 settings or notches, thus one could quickly change setting of lever to suit either a Farmall or a W Series tractor. The reduction gear was on the actual depth setting giving finer actual settings. I had photos of these levers on file in my computer at one time, they are now gone. I received them from Jim Cox in Innerkip Ontario and I e mailed them to Rusty Farmall, so if either one of those gentlemen are looking in perhaps they could post the photos.
