Anybody familiar with the Magnum motor?

7140 Magnum with the Cummins 6TA 830. Some of you may remember last spring I was asking about coolant getting into the engine oil. Did all the tests, had the pan off, pressured it up, no leak. So I ran it this summer with just water in the cooling system,so as not to destroy the bearings, hoping the problem would become obvious. Nope, just kept putting the water in the oil. Anyway, my question is, is there anywhere in the timing gear area where the coolant can mix with the oil, like a frost plug or something. If you take the timing gear housing off, is there an opening to the water jacket covered by a gasket perhaps?
The last couple of days of my fall work, it suddenly stopped losing coolant, but started leaking LOTS of motor oil out around the timing gear housing area. So what the heck- this doesn"t make sense.
Just wondered if any of you remember what"s between the block and that housing.

Oil leaks on the front cover are fairly common. The bolts that hold the cover on get loose and the gasket blows between the block and cover. You'll either have to pull the cam or heat the cam gear and pull it off to get the cover off. Either way it's not a real big job. There is no water at the gearcase though. Are you sure it doesn't have a bad headgasket or possibly a bad oil cooler. You'll also need a special seal installer to put the new seal/wearsleeve on the crank when you reasseble it. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight Jake. Is that cam gear steel or aluminum? I was thinking of pulling the head this winter anyway to try to find the coolant leak, so if I have the head off, it might just be easier to pull the whole cam? I just can"t figure out why it suddenly quit using coolant, from a gallon a day to nothing.
My reasoning on the oil cooler is that oil pressure is higher than coolant pressure, so wouldn"t it get oil in the antifreeze, not the other way around? Have you found that to be true, or is something else going on?

The gear is some sort of steel and to get it off will require heat. I always pull the cam, but you have to keep from dropping any lifters as they are mushroom style and won't come out the top. To remove the cam all the lifters must be held up with wooden dowels during the process. As soon as I get the cam out I put a piece of cut in half PVC pipe in to catch one if it happens to fall out. So far I've never needed it but it is just a little insurance. If you do decide to pull the cam gear don't overheat it or it may not shrink back down to fit tight on reassembly. Our local dealer does the heat method and did ruin one gear, but has been successful many other times. Before you pull the head make sure to pull the injectors as they protrude out the bottom. Snap-on makes a puller or you can build one with the propper metric hyd. fitting. As far as the cooler, yes the oil PSI is greater, but they only leak one way sometimes, and when you shut the tractor off it has 15PSI on the cooling system until it cools. I would pull the cooler and have it tested at the local radiator shop. Hope this helps. Jake

Paul i wish i could help ya but i have never been into one of them 8.3 cummins . If i ever did have to work on one i would have to go get a cummins book and also go talk to the boys that work on them everyday . I know several guys that still work on the cummins but i have know idea when i'll see them . As you are probably not the only one that has had this problem or here's and idea give cummins a call down in Columbus Ind. and talk to tech supportwhen i bought my dodge with a cummins i called down there and had a nice long talk with a guy that told me a lot about the 5.9 and they even have and 800 # .

That"s a good idea. You don"t happen to know the 800 # do you? I googled Cummins and nothing popped out at me right away. I do have the I&T shop manual for the tractor, which covers that motor, at least to the extent that I&T covers that sort of thing. I suppose I"ll have to do exploratory surgery pretty soon. Thanks.

Something is seriously wrong with the engine, and it needs to be taken apart anyway, so why not just go ahead and do it? Tractors are not like computers where you can diagnose the problem by what it does. Most of the time you have to take it apart, find the problem the old-fashioned way, and fix it.
