The asking price for an 38 F12 I am looking at is $900

the owner says that motor is stuck – I have the following questions to anyone with knowledge of the F12

how do I tell if the block is cracked (internal water jacket) …. oil in the water? – antifreeze contaminated or leaking?

is this a good tractor for my first restoration project – I don’t have a lot of money – but I like this tractor for a restoration rather than my H, which is still doing the work round here

are F12 engine parts available – i.e. pistons bearings, head parts …etc.

would $450 be a reasonable offer to make on a 38 F12 with stuck motor

Oh, by the way... in reply to ChrisL, 12-02-2005 03:53:21
I wouldn't let a cracked block stop me from buying it (if it was cracked, it would just justify a significantly lower sale price). The blocks on the F-12's commonly cracked, usually in the same place. They can be fixed...

I definately wouldn't pay more than $450.00 for it. I got mine (complete, but stuck and cracked block for $150.00). Does it have factory rims, cut-off rims, or steel wheels?

I don't think too much about how much a tractor will cost to restore vs. how much I can buy a restored one for. I get a lot of satisfaction out of 1) saving an old tractor from scrap, etc., and 2) having done it myself.

I'd say go for it and take lots of pictures throughout the project. The fun of restoring and admiring these things is what it's all about!

Hope you can get it!

Tony

The water jacket just above the fuel pump and extending behind the governor is where most cracking occurs. Many have been welded and will still hold water. Check the oil for water which might indicate an internal crack. The manifolds also were prone to rusting out and cracking. I'm about done with an F14. I've enjoyed working on the 14, but I'll buy a restored one next time around. Rrestored ones are just to plentiful and cheap to justify sinking much into an unrestored one. My next project will be a 12.

$450 is enough for a stuck F-12 unless it has neat options like a wide front or Waukesha engine. High speed rear end on the later ones or a overdrive unit is nice to have. Tires will cost you around $500.. unless they are 40" then figure $400 a side for the rears. F-12 parts are available everywhere including sleve and piston sets. THey are a relatively easy restore. As people have told you though they don't necessarily bring much restored. It is easy to get way more into the tractor than you will get out of it. That being said I am working on a 33 F-12 myself.
