I have a 1486 that has no forward gear, reverse works fine. Linkage seems to be fine. Has any one run in to this? Any help would be great. Not too familar with tractor repair but, I'm sure with some pointers I can fix it.

The special tool the tractor vet mentioned is one part is used to push down on the reverse shaft as you lift the cover so that the half moon key don't fall out from down below. That ain't the biggest deal in the process but I'm sure you don't want to monkey with the fuel tank just to get to the side cover. When it goes back together you need the second part of the tool kit to hold the detent arms and spring in place as you put the cover back on. This part is probobly impossible without the tool. Don't fret if you see that you need a fork or rail, just remove the retaining clip on the rail and slide it back to replace the fork and the rail can be installed from the hole behind the top link cover with a long reach. Also rebuild the shift cover as long as its off because it probobly needs to be done anyway.

Never gave it a thought about the aux fuel tank , not to many of them around here , i think my 14 is the only one in the area.

Do you feel the detents in the high and low shifts or does it just flop back and forth? If it flops around then remove the floor plate and look under seat to see if the linkage is still hooked up and to see if the lever on the cover didn't come off or loose. If everything appears good there then the problem may be under the cover. So if you feel the shift detent then the problem is internal (shift fork, shift rail, etc.) It should be a repair that doesn't need splitting of the tractor.

Thank you for your response. I"ve taken the seat and floor panel off, the linkage seems fine. I"ll take the cover off and inspect for any damage underneath. Is there any thing special with taking the cover off or does it just un bolt and come right off? Again thanks again for your help.

You should have the special tool for the cover removal ,But if you can get and extra set of hands and remove the cover on the side of the rev. shifter it can be done just don't lose any pices . You will loose about 1 gal of hytran when the side cover comes off . My guess is that either ya sheared a key and pin or the high low shift fork broke if the shift linkage is moving back and forth . just becareful when you are bringing the top cover up and LOOK between the cover and case yea i know it is hard to get your head cocked to look but use a couple trouble trouble lites.
