Hi again, i am sorry about the last message i was half asleep. I would like to know if the tracor is worth bying and what it can do in the field. The guy is asking 5000 for it, and it has been sitting outside for atleast five years and does not have a coolant filter on it. Front end has been broke and three point has been wielded and have not hurd run. And rear Rubber is about 50% and weather checked. New Batteries are Needed too. Has no Cab but has fenders with lights. Do you think that the price is too high?

I think I would have to go with the tractor vet on this one. I think that sounds like a parts tractor to me. If it has been sitting for five years without being run, you can pretty much assume their will be a bunch of stuff that you can't see, that also will need fixing. 966's are a pretty common tractor, I'd look for another one.

this may sound a littel harsh but from what you have said about this tractor it sounds like it should be hit between the headlites with a hammer and put out of it's missery , no water filter so you'll be looken at and overhaul at some point in time busted ft. axel broken three point needs paint new batterys and you have know idea if the clutch and T/a are any good or trans and rear end . Now anything is fixable but at what cost??? i did a 1066 up for a guy some years back that just had to have a 1066 and did not like the price of the one that i had forsale ( 8500) so he and his dad went and bought one at a sale for 5000 this 1066 had been hit by a semi and broke in half mickey moused back into a whole tractor with a broken dash support held together with strips of flat iron and bolts bad tires bad engine bad T/A bad transmission broken ft.bent up sheetmetal busted seat junk wiring and the list goes on then they bring it to me to fix well we fixed it and my one buddy painted it and the tire man put new tires on it and when they were done with it the best we could figure was that they had well over 18500 in it i had every nut and bolt out of that tractor scattered across the shop , But they bought it cheep .

Jamie,

Sittin' outside doesn't hurt 'em a bit other than scortchin' the paint, but I guarantee you that the PTO input gear is wobbled out, which means splittin' the tractor, just for starters.

The lack of a coolant filter along with that busted front end tells you how the tractor was treated; it, in all likelihood, needs an engine and you just don't knock that heavy front end out without a certain amount of misuse.

Lastly, they aren't worth a dime if you don't have the heavy work to hook 'em to because that's where they shine. They aren't like the old 06 and 56 series large frame tractors, they just don't like light-duty chores.

It all depends on how much value you put on your $5K I guess, 'cause it is going to turn into $15K real fast if you are really serious about this old tractor.

Allan

Jamie L., A new rebuilt front end from Abilene Machine@ Abilene KS is about $1100. You install!
3pt parts will set you back more like $500 in good used parts.
Armed with this info, That feller is asking waaay too much for it.
I bought mine a number of yrs ago for just under $6000 great shape(TA good-straight tin) and new rear rubber. No cab.new seat too!
Like Adam said $3000 is more correct. But it will Salave for a little more.
Allan in Neb just bought a 966 awhile back and had it gone through. It is is surenough nice he can give you some pointers on what to look for.
Hope this helps,
Later,
John A.

I think it sounds like it is salvagable, I would ask to here it run, and make sure that nothing major is wrong mechanically. If the front end has been broke, and the three point has been welded, your looking at $1000 to repair those two, and if the tires are badly weather checked, your looking at another $1000 for a pair of new radials. This isnt including if it needs any other work mechanically, I would say hes too high, and would offer him $3000 for it if it runs decent.
