Why do some older IH tractors have 34 inch tires and others 38s? My 826D is listed as having either (mine has the 34s) but I guess I want to understand the reason why. 38s seem much more common these days. 34 inch wheels are certainly cheaper at sales. Any input, o-Gurus-of-the-Red?

It was mostly a matter of cost. The smaller tires and rims were less expensive, and IH could pass the savings on to its investors.

If you're on dry ground, the 34" tires are fine. These tractors didn't have much ground clearance with the 34-inchers, and if you get in mud, look out. You're going to bottom out, quickly.

One thing about the smaller tires is that your actual ground speed is much slower than what the tachometer indicates. You probably think you're going great guns with all sorts of extra horsepower... It's the small tires; they have the same effect as running in a lower gear.

AHA! (Slap!) Shoulda thought of that myself! Now I know why the tach was saying 6mph and my GPS showed about 4.5. I haven't noted any particular performance problems using 34s. Given they have 80 percent rubber, there certainly isn't reason enough to swap.

Too bad you're probably nowhere near me. A set of step-rims for 34" hubs to run 38" tires is something Dad's been looking for for about 20 years.

Chad, those rims are made that way so they fit on the same cast wheel center (hub) as the 34"s. You can get the same type of rim if you have a tractor with 38"s on originally and you want to go to 42"s. I"m not sure, but I think that meant your tractor came with 34"s. How are the tires on those rims? Many times folks with the old 34"s would want to upgrade to the 38"s that way- it"s an easy conversion.

They are not a matched set, but little over 50%, 18.4X38's rims are good. We farmed with a 856 for a long time, still have it. Strong ol tractor. Id like to restore the 856 one of these days. It has a cab off a 1066 on it, Id like to put fenders on it someday. Chad

Yeah, I"ve got three tractors with 34"s on that should be 38"s, a 706, a green tractor and a "brand X". Thing is, the 706 needs many other things first, the green one the tires are so close to the fender now that I"m not sure 38"s would clear, and the Brand X is MFWD, so that might screw up the ratio. I"d kind of like to put 38" straddle duals on the 1640 combine though.
