Red-hot resistor - final - maybe

Back from the shop and working. Said there was a short in the field windings. Also said the cutout was bad but not really related to the initial problem. Suggested we put on a VR instead. Did so. I asked if I should hook in the field resistor like done originally and was told it didn't matter. Hooked it up to check it out, and the ammeter reads charge and when I change the switch from L to H, I get a different reading. Thoughts??

Most regulators will have instructions that tell you not to use the wire going to the resistor in the sw located on the steering post. At least the ones i have used do. There was an article in RED POWER wote by the manufacture pres that makes the regs and he covered that well.

I concur with the advice of John T and Janicolson - don't use the field resistor! A voltage regulator working by itself is fully automatic. Incorporating the field resistor will only "confuse" the regulator - with unpredictable results.

And thanks for the feedback on what the root cause of the problem was!

Thanks guys. That's what I wanted to hear. I am going to disconnect.

Congrats Alan, Hmmmmm mmm a short ?? Seems like that was cussed n discussed by Jim n Bob n myself somewhere before lol. I would disagree with the advice and that it "didnt matter" whether or not you still used the light switch Field resistor if you converted to a full fledged 3 terminal Voltage Regulator, as its job is to automatically and better control and regulate the rate of charge versus guessing and manually doing so when you set the light switch for low or high charge rates. The VR is supposed to control the net effective field ground via resistance and modulation, so if you threw in additional resistance it seems it would upset the dynamics and parameters of how the VR was designed to function. If the genny happened to be a 3 brush type I (if converted to a VR) would have it set for the max rate of charge and NOT use the light switch field resistor.

Thanks for the feedback and again, glad to hear shes gennin.

I'm glad it is operating. Some brain exercises are complex and intertaining at the same time. I went through a long list of possible things an narrowed (with John T) till the field was the only thing left.
I would disconnect the control from the resistor/switch system and leave it to the regulator. The regulator thinks for the operator on a second to second basis. The operator (with the sw) would make hour to hour decisions without any information to base it on. Congradulations.
