How Should I Sell It!

The 706 was a hanger queen. Allways in for repairs. The gas version was a mighty thursty beast. This was not one of IH's best products. If you asked me about purchaseing a 706 at any price - I'd say save your money and get something better like a 560,656 or 806, 826 etc.

You would be lucky to sell a fully running diesel 706 for $3,000, and a gas is worth even less.

I'm a little confused with the mechanic - if you paid for the repairs why didn't you get back a fully running tractor

Can't argue about the 806 or 826, but to say that a 706 is any worse than an 806 or 826... All a 706 is, is an 806 with a smaller engine and lower hood. The gassers are definitely thirsty for sure, but if yours broke all the time, you got one of the few lemons. ALL tractor models had an occasional lemon, even the mighty Farmall M. The 706 is only the second-best tractor IH ever made because it wasn't as powerful as the 806.

But if you can't sell it complete, you should part it out. You would probably come out a head of your $3300 figure. I watched a guy part out a basket case SMTA on ebay and make $4500...

What you can do is protect yourself. If a deal seems too good to be true, or doesn't feel right, WALK AWAY. Familiarize yourself with the common scams, like the one where they send you too much money "by mistake" and want you to forward the "extra" on to a third party. Like I said, if something smells rotten, WALK AWAY. You can say no.

Frankly, I wouldn't accept less than cash in hand, and I wouldn't pay any other way if it were me buying the tractor.

You've allready been had by two scammers, that being the shop you took it to for repairs and their lawyer. You should have demanded your complete old parts tractor back back on that day. He did not have any grounds for collecting bill on work done to date, as he did not finish the project. Further he certainly had no grounds for making you pay for unused new parts. He apparently was not able to complete the work, thus that should have been his loss, not yours.

I think $3300 for a already running gas 706 would be about right for my area, maybe a tad high.

For a basket case 706, I think you'll be lucky to get $2000 even with the new parts laying there and it'll be a slow seller.

That's the way I see it. I'd try posting it on every internet forsale web site that I could find. You might get lucky.

See what ya mean. It would have to be some ol' boy who has been in a million engines and wouldn't flinch at the idea of a "binder in a box".

But darn! Daggone duals and front end should fetch a good chunk of that price right off the bat, shouldn't it?

Well I was pricing the basket case without new parts at $1000 and too me that's little high but seams what they will sell for lately. You darn well know that there's probably some missing parts that got over looked when it was boxed up or just disappeared before he picked them up.

If it was me, I think I'd be happy to cut my loss at $1500 if I didn't want to put it back together my self before more parts got misplaced.

Maybe a project tractor for the local high school kids? Or Vo-Tech? If He's willing to put in about another $500??? in missing parts, this could be the cheapest way out next spring. He would still have about $6000 in a completed tractor but worth it at todays new tractor cost.

I'd write it up just as you did here. You come across as a straight ahead honest guy that just wants out of this tiresome situation. Call it a "Take all or nothing basket case".

At $3300, that thing should just fly off the shelf to some old duffer like me who would want to take the time to put 'er back together. The hard work of cleaning, teardown and machining has already been done and it is easily a $5,000 tractor if it were put back in running condition. It is a bargin just waiting for the right guy to come along.

The only thing I'd change is that "Fast hitch 3-point" business. That always turns me off; it is a fast hitch with a set of adaptors, right?

Heck, I'd take the thing if I were closer to you. Hope ya get 'er sold.
