im helping a freind out with a 1947 cub he just purchased. he has no oil pressure.the tractor sat idle for a long time and was sold at auction not running. we split the tractor last night and removed the pump cover but really didnt see anything worn out there. we checked the bypass valve. we put a can of oil up to the pickup tube and cranked the engine over with no results.we primed the pump through the oil filter and got a little bit of pumping then. the rod bearings have some play.will these pumps pick up without prime when first overhauled? the gentleman that owned this tractor passed away so we dont have a clue what he did but it was all painted and you could tell it had not run in awhile.any advice would be appreciated.thanks for now, russ

In addition to what John has recommended you need to remove the oil filter cap and fill the housing
and replace the top. The Cubs are known for losing their oil pressure. I would keep these tips so if it happens again you will be prepared.
Keep an eye on the oil pressure during the initial startup. Some owners have had this problem after changing oil too. I think the way the pump is installed may cause the problem. Most oil pumps are always vertical. Bolted to the bottom of block. Hal

If the pump has been apart it is necessary to prime it. Remove the allen head plug on the left side of the rear engine flange (may be behind TC lines if so equipped), and use a squirt can to pump oil in there until full, turn engine over a few times, refill, etc. do this 2 or 3 times. I have heard some people have also had luck priming them by pumping oil into the small hole inside the front of the oil filter housing, but haven't tried that myself. Also make sure the oil pickup tube is tight to the fitting where it attaches to the bolttom of the block.

I've done it a lot of times using the hole on the left side but now profer to use the hole inside the filter housing. By using this hole and watching the hole while cranking, you can see that the pump is working (or not) without waiting for the pump to fill the filter housing before getting gauge pressure. It's very reassuring!
