winter starting a Hydro 86

Seems like any time it gets colder than about 10 below it won't start. I left a magnetic heater on the transmission housing tonight in hopes that might help. Besides moving to a warmer clime, anybody have any good ideas?

Hi NC,

Have you checked the injector timing? If it's with-in spec's, try increasing the timing a couple degrees.

I've never tried this on that pictular engine but have used this on other diesels with good results.

Boy, I dunno Howard,

Sounds to me like you have all the classic symptoms of an engine that is gettin' a little low on wind.

Even at -25, that thing ought to pop after an hour or so on the heater.

I saw one in at the red shop that had the same problems as yours. After they opened it up, every sleeve/piston in it was scored. They told me it was caused from deacceleration with a cold engine during cold temps.

312's should start much better than 310's. Still, a big tank heater will do much better than the freeze plug heater. It would also be a good idea to get your injectors checked out some time soon. A fresh set of injectors is the easiest way to improve cold starting and all-around performance of a diesel.

310 diesel? If so, good luck. Best thing besides an overhaul with the late-style pistons would be the highest wattage tank heater you can find. Freeze plug heaters don't do enough for that engine when it's below zero.

My 310 bellyaches to high heaven if it is 40 out. Nature of the beast, I'm told.

I had an external tank heater (1000w)for my 706 german. 310. Used a timer with it. They sure start easier when warmed up a little.
