Hi,
I have a 1944 w-4 farmall. It needs a new piston bearing on number 1 and the shaft needs to be re ground. I am thinking about a used engine, short block or just replace the bearing and shaft. Any one have any thoughts or knows where there is a good used engine??

Couldn"t you go with an engine out of a 300 or 350? Think there 169 ci. and should bolt right up. A little extra power goes a long way they say.
Good luck. I have wanted a W-4 for a while but they seem to bring more then what I want to let go of right now.

Ok everyone is on board for a total rebuild....how about a short block? ...time and money is important now?

I seriousy doubt there is such thing as a short block for a 50 to 60 year old tractor.

Sure there is. VB has a c152 for about $1400 (2004 catalog). I notice that there is no exchange price on those, for some reason, unlike all the other older Farmalls.

You should get a ball park estimate from your local auto machine shop to redo your block. Compare that to what a short block would cost.

I would have the the crankshaft ground. I would have all the journals ground undersize. You may as well rebuild the engine, then you will be good for a long time. At one time our local machine shop would grind one rod journal while the engine was in the vehicle. I think that'a a thing of the past. Hal

The W-4 uses the same engine as the Farmall H, rebuild parts are available just about anywhere you want to look. Rebuilding the engine you have will be best option. You might luck out and find a used engine, but the odds are that it will need to be rebuilt also.

John:
If the engine is Ok on all other areas it would be well worth doing a full job on it. I have a 1942 W4 and rebuilt the engine 20 years ago. It is getting to the point I should do it again but these things last if they are done right. Don't take short cuts. It just doesn't pay in the long run.
I use mine a lot, to pull a wagon, spreader, rake and stuff. Very useful little guy.
