More Heat Gauge Woes.....Your Opinion?

So,

Gene Bender over in Iowa sends me this bushing for the heat gauge. Thanks Gene!!

Getta load of those fine threads on the inside!

Anyhoo, I've got two gauges, the old one and the new one. If I put a flame under that old thermocoupler, the gauge comes right up.

Put it in the tractor and it won't move off of cold; had the tractor running for half an hour or so. So, I stick a thermometer in the radiator and it reads 140 degrees.

Do I need to put in the new gauge or just maybe the old heifer needs a different thermostat?

Whadda think?

Allan

I replaced the original sender and guage on my H, and the needle still doesn't move. This tractor is used for odd heavy moving jobs and pushing snow - nothing too extended - so _now_ I'm not seeing it as any surprise. The only time I get a reading on the guage is after the tank heater has been on for a while - 1/2 to 1 hour - warming up the engine in winter.

Take a look in the archives, I think this issue has been lived by at least a few of us.

You may need to work that tractor under load to get it up to temperature. Hal

Yes Sir,

That thought crossed my mind too. But even my diesels, if I let 'em idle long enough, will at least move the gauge a little.

Dunno,

Allan

I tested one with a flame once. I'll not do that again. Ruined a perfectly good guage.

Heat it in a pan of water with a real thermometer
and compare!
New thermostat may be needed. If it is a diesel it is even more cold natured.

Thanks Guys,

I'm thinkin' that too. I just dropped the new thermocoupler in the radiator. It doesn't move either.

Seems to me, back in the day of gauges on cars and trucks, that the temp needed to be up around 150 'fore the gauge would even move?

It's a gasser.

Allan

Whats the lowest reading on the gauge?? Also its better to use a pan of water on the stove then to use a flame. Flames heat fast and a pan of water checks the gauge as it should be working. What maybe happening with that gauge is that is sticks and your flame trick made it just past where it sticks. I'd use the pan of water to check it out and see what happens.
