Its me again. Starters fixed and gears are fixed. Now i need to know the firing order for a Farmall MD. The way it was on the Magneto was 1-2-3-4, but i think thats wrong. Is it 1-3-4-2, thats what i think most other farmall gas burners are. Its also having a hard time starting up, it will fire every once and a while, But won't start and run. Is their a gas problem where gas isn't getting their or am i missing somthing. NEED HELP, Parade is tomorrow. I really need help. Any is appriciated. Thanks

As others said, distributor rotates counterclockwise when facing the rotor. Firing order 1-3-4-2 counterclockwise. It the tractor has a magneto rather than a battery ignition, please note that the breaker cam has only two lobes and a gear set with 2:1 gear ration between the lobe and the rotor. Thus, it's possible to get the timing 180 degrees out of phase and the tractor will not start, but will backfire and blow oil out of the aircleaner inlet. You can correct this by removing the breaker cover and rotating one half revolution of the slotted connection on the shaft, or by reconnecting the plug wires to compensate.

An non-running MD is not a tractor you can expect to get running in a short period of time, there are too many variables. If you get desperate to go in the parade you could pull start it on diesel. It's not something you want to do very often because engine should be somewhat warm. If you have it in heated shop you would be alright, just don't turn it off at the parade.

Note that mag turns OPPOSITE of a gas M. Might want to crank engine over with distributor cap removed to double check correct firing order. Brian

An observation - if it's an MD it doesn't have a mag or sparkplug wires or gas or a carb . The " D " stands for diesel . You sure it's a MD and not a plain M ? Someone correct me if I'm wrong . ...Randy

Okay Randy, you're wrong.

M, Super M, Super MTA, 400, 450, W9, Super W9, 600, and 650 diesel models, as well as the diesel bulldozers of the time, all started on gasoline to warm up the combustion chamber, then switched over to diesel. Engine technology of the time, at least the stuff IH was using, didn't allow for high enough compression for a direct-start diesel.

The first direct-start diesel to appear in an IH tractor was the Continental diesel used in the 350 Diesel, I believe.

Hi , OK , I'll bet it won't be the last time either . But that's why I read this site , UH , to learn thing's right and wrong . I've never operated a gas start diesel just the pony motor start and that was 25 years ago . ....Randy

MDs start on gas and then switch over to diesel. It was a way to make a diesel engine start when cold and also to save on starters needing to be big and extra heavy. The engines are very much like the TD dozers/crawler tractors.

MD starts on gas and then is switched over to diesel, therefore it has both a gasoline system and diesel system. 1342 is the firing order.

Funny---I remember as a young lad being with my dad at the IH parts counter and a fellow wanted sparkplugs for his super MD . The parts man said are you crazy , diesels don't have sparkplugs. Before it was over there actually was an argument going until the veteran parts guy showed up and set everybody straight as he brought out the sparkplugs for a 53 SMD

If it is wired wrong that in itself will prevent firing up. Looking at it from rear toward front.
